THE BEER STRIKE
SUPPORTED BY RAILWAYMEN PLEDGE TO BOYCOTT HOTELS INSISTENCE ON IMPERIAL PINT (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Aug. 23. Another 1700 men have decided not to drink beer or spirits until "handles," "half handles," and bottjes are restored to "their usual price. This decision was arrived at to-day at a mass meeting of emoloyees of the Otahuhu railway workshops who decided by resolution—"to protest to the Government 'against the present exploitation of the consuming public by the Dublicans." The resolution also asked that the Dublicans should be brought into line with other retailers by the introduction of the imperial pint as a standard measure, thus complying with the requirements of the Weights and Measures Act. In addition, the meeting protested against what were alleged to be the exorbitant prices charged for beer and spirits.
The meeting pledged itself to refrain from frequenting hotels in Auckland and the suburbs until such time as the licensed victuallers reconsider their decision. A further resolution protested against the general rise in the cost of living and demanded that the Price Tribunal should immediately investigate the rise in staple foodstuffs. Both resolutions were carried unanimously.
