September 2.—Otago C Grade v. West Otago, at Tapanui. September 9—Fourth and Fifth Grade tournaments. - September 16.—Otago C Grade v. Eastern Otago. ' NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT Additional information has been received concerning the 17 participants in the 1939 New. Zealand tournament, which was commenced yesterday at Invercargill. Auckland, Hawke's Bay Wellington, Canterbury, Otago. and Southland have entered , for the First Grade, and competition for the championship should be keen. At present Wellington and Canterbury share the nremiej' honours, Southland holding the Annie Brown Cup. In the Second Grade. South Canterbury, Southland Minor. Waikato, Ashburton. Manawatu. and Wairarapa are all fielding strong teams, and South Canterbury and Southland Minor will find it no easy task to maintain their places at the top of the Second Grade. Bush, holders of the Kiwi trophy for the Third Grade, have not entered, and Wanganui and West Coast, who tied for the runners-up trophy, the Armstrong Shield, will both be after the leader's trophy. Hokitika, Otago Minor, and Temuka . also have hopes of annexing a trophy.

The, following referees have been appointed:—Misses J. Stanley (Auckland), T. Fox (Taranaki), M. Gardner (Hutt Valley), G. Besstian and Hutton (Southland), Messrs Morris (Wellington), Naughton. (Canterbury), and Forde (Southland). Mrs K. Mackintosh t Canterbury) has been appointed North Island selector, and. Miss M. E.. Armstrong (Wellington) South Island selector,, Because of the scarcity of hotel accommodation in Invercargill many of the visiting players are being boarded in private homes. An excellent response to the executive's request for board has been received, thus lightening the duties of the Accommodation Subcommittee. WALKER & HALL CHALLENGE The annual game between the winners and runners-up of the First Grade Competition for ownership of the Walker and Hall Challenge Cup for the ensuing 12 months was played between Albany I and Training College last Saturday. - The game, like its predecessor, was one of great interest, and provided many thrilling moments of exciting play. On the whole, both teams were evenly matched, although Training College showed a more even distribution of strength among its nine players, and it was. probably this factor, that gave it the victory. The scores mounted slowly, five minutes elapsing, before the two teams had found the ring. Both sides showed inaccuracy in shooting, and the .final score only reached 13 goals to 9, despite numerous efforts to find the ring. The game was characterised by fast passing movements, clever interceptions, and fine team work on the part of both sides, although the prevailing excitement seemed to affect the gracefulness of the work. The outstanding centres were Lorna Scott (Training College) and Gwen McAuslin (Albany), although all six players did not relax their eflorts until the final whistle was sounded Clarice Batchelor again played a sterling game in Albany's defence third, maintaining the form shown three weeks previously when the two teams met in the second round. Dorothy Adams, although playing good basketball, did not consistently produce that brilliant form now expected of her. In the College forward third the standard of play was so even that one could not single out any particular player; but, in the defence, the work of Jessie McLean again deserves special commendation. Hutton). TARANAKI v. WELLINGTON Although defeated by 20 goals to 13, Wellington third- gave Taranaki strong opposition. Taranaki gained its lead in the first half of the game, leading 10—3 at the interval. In the first spell Wellington's inexperience of representative play was obviously affecting the team, nervous handling of the ball permitting easy interceptions, by Taranaki, whose centre was strengthened by the inclusion of M. Matangi, ex-Auckland, Wellington, and New Zealand representative, and captain of the 1938 New Zealand team; Taranaki's team was further strengthened by the inclusion of Aynsley Kerr, a well-known Otago and Albany Club representative, who is doing excellent service for the game in the northern district. With the addition of these two first class players. Taranaki produced excellent basketball and Wellington Thirds are to be pommended on the improved form shown in the second half,-when the team played more confidently and scored an equal number of goals as the opposing side (10 all). The defence in particular, spoiled ' manv of Taranaki's attacking movements. Whitcombes for Basketball.*
