By Centre-half }': FIXTURES August 26.—Canterbury v. Otago, at Dunedin (Seniors and Juniors) September. 15— Otagq v. North Otago. at Dunedin (senior and junior). September 15.—Otago v. Southland, at Dunedin (senior, junior, and primary schools). COMPETITION TABLES The senior competition has been closed, with University A in an unassailable position. The following table shows: the, position, of the teams:— Goals'

MATCH" : WITH CANTERBURY Some doubt, has been expressed on; the .question .whether Canterbury will send its best team, to • Dunedin this week-end for the annual !interproVincial match, with Otagoland after the result-of the match with Southland it is doubtful.whether this province can field a-side sufficiently strong to meet Canterbury's best team; The Otago side is: practically unchanged from that which went to Invercargill early this month, the only alteration being the replacement with L. R. "Hercus (Old Boys) of J. R. J. Moore (University) as goalkeeper Hercus is probably ! ihe better of the two, and unless the rest of the team improve ort. ; its earlier form' he will probably have a good deal of work to do. W. S. Wood :and'H..Seelye should WQrkwelJ together as full backs, and the halt line, consisting of B. Bedford, L, Gurr, and A. Botting,.appear,'strong; If did hot show up to! great advantage against Sduthlarid, however,. and will require to bebetter on Saturday, In the forward line it appears ..to the r/riter that' J.: Webb would be. more useful is centre than B. Q. Rybiirh, the. former's.'. reputation Yas a, snapshooter in the circle being good. burn, however, is expected to combine more readily with, YuleV inside right, but it is questionable whether this .will prove the advantage, hoped for. D. Stewart-and A. J. Alldred, on the left* are 'both very. reliable, and should prove instrumental in'getting Otago's scores. '.Si Dobier- has proved 'himself'' • good right wing. Central Otago, at Alexandra. ' ;..';. ■ A GRADE COMPETITION _. As a -result of Saturday's matches, the A Grade competition now lies between Kings and Otago,: who have yet to meet in the. second round. Kings defeat of Training College put the latter definitely put of the running, and the final match to decide- the issue will; now probably be played on Saturday week. The following table shows the position of the teams at present:— 'Goals

REPEESENTATTVE MATCHES The,' first women's . representative matches of the season will be played on Saturday, the Otago A team meeting South. Otago ait". Milton, and the Otago B team going-to Oamaru to play. North Otago. It" will be surprising if the teams selected, dd not win their matches without difficulty, for hockey is undoubtedly stronger this year than has been the casejjtor. some seasons past. The improvement is most noticeable in the forward.line, for which "there'.tore more candidates, than usual, and the selector has been able to provide two teams with forwards which should lose few opportunities. ,H. Harley and A. Harley will be relied upon for their best Work in the middle of the A team, and: they will have the ■ two good University players,',A. Marshall and N Stewart, on'the. r|ght, and W. Ryan, who has played one or two good ; games this season, »,op the left. The two University .players combine well together, as do the two Kings' forwards, and it only remains for the left-wing to enter into the combination to make the line a really formidable one. In the B team there, will be greater need for combination, as the members of the forward line are from various teams, and have had little opbortunity so far of getting together. The trials which have been held have been adversely affected by the weather and, ground conditions, biit all are players of some note and experience/Mrs Sbnntag, it appears, is to" take the centre-forward with "J. Thomson (Otago) and K. Sheddah (Training College) on the right, and E. Marshall (University) and N. Collin's (Training College) on the left. The last-mentioned player has given some excellent displays of the left-wing game during the season, and if she strikes form should be prominent Jn Otago's attacking movements. The province is well off for. halves, and both, teams are well equipped in this department. M. Fisher is expected to be very useful as" centre-'ial in the A tea"m, with A. Mackie, whose long experience should be of the utmost value, on the right, and B. Campbell, who has this season been the most consistent half in the competition, on the left! In the B team B Mackie, who has been at her best in "club matches will have the centre place, with D. Kennedy and F. Malcolm (University) as wings. This line has not the same amount of experience as the A team's halves." but all three players are very consistent, and may be confidently expected to give ortheir best A. Marshall (University). tnd M Stevens (Dunedin), together with S Nicholson (Training College) have been given the rearguard work of the, A team. The Dunedin player .has been prominent throughout the season in her club team, and has had of practice. S. Nicholson has probably been-, the outstanding goal-keeper, though in club" matches she has been behind an efficient defence and has had less work to do than would otherwise

have been the case. E. Symon (Kings), and R. Morton (Otago), full-backs of the B team have played very consis tenth throughout, and. D. Brosnan . (Otago), has shown greatly ' improved form in goals. The association has arranged a representative match with Central Otago and this is to be played at Alexandra on September 16. VAHBRO, the Faultless Hair Cream.*
