OBITUARY
MR A. H. VALENTINE The death occurred at Auckland on Tuesday of Mr Arthur Herbert Valentine, who was well known in business and lodge circles in Dunedin. He was manager of the firm of Messrs H. Isaacs, Ltd., indent merchants, at the time of his death. Mr Valentine was born in Adelaide and came to New Zealand at an early age. He joined the firm of Messrs H. Isaacs Ltd. as a boy and rose steadily until he was appointed manager in 1919. He possessed an excellent reputation in business circles in the city, and was highly respected by all who knew him. Outside his work Mr Valentine's chief interest lay in Oddfellowship and Freemasonry. He joined the Leith Lodge, No. 4,1.0.0. F., in 1900, and was elected to the Grand Lodge seven years later. In 1913 he was elected to the position Of Grand Master of the Order in New Zealand. He was also a past grand representative of the Grand Lodge of Australasia. Mr Valentine had a remarkable collection of books on Oddfellowship and Freemasonry, including some rare works; in fact, it was regarded as the best collection in Australia and New Zealand. Mr Valentine was also interested in Freemasonry, and held advanced degrees in the Lodge Celtic. Mr Valentine was a member of the George Street School Committee for a number of years and took a keen interest in educational affairs. He was also a keen follower of Rugby football. He was held in high esteem by, members of the Commercial Travellers' Association, of which he was a member.
Mr Valentine is survived by his wife and a daughter (Miss Marjory Valentine). Mr Thomas Valentine (Dunedin) is a brother.
