OBITUARY

MRS JOHN R. CLARK An early resident of the district, Mrs John R. Clark, died at Waitati on August 16 at the age of 80 years. Together with her parents and other members of the family, she arrived at Port Chalmers on the ship Henrietta in 1860. They settled at Mount Cargill, where she grew to womanhood At first she walked to the North-East Valley School, but later she attended the Waitati School, walking all the way both morning and night. In 1876-she married Mr John Clark, of Waitati, who was a passenger by the Three Bells, in 1858. The late Rev. A. Finlayson officiated at this, the first marriage in that district. Mrs Clark lived all her married life oh the place on which she and her husband settled 63 vears ago. Mrs Clarke was well known and was loved by all who knew her. She was of a kindly disposition and always veady to help by word or deed. Her husband predeceased her by 16 years, and one son and four daughters survive her.
