METROPOLITAN FIRE BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING ANNUAL REPORT APPROVED The monthly meeting of the Dunedin Metropolitan Fire Board was held yesterday afternoon, there being present Messrs W. W. Callender (chairman), W. A. Scott, T. G. Tonkins. J. Wilson, and L. G. Wilson. Superintendent's Report Superintendent R. H. Price submitted the following monthly report: The Central Fire Brigade answered a total of 61 calls which were made up as follows:—Fires 15, chimney fires 22, malicious false alarms 4, justifiable alarms 4, automatic alarms 14, accidental alarms 2. The South Dunedin Brigade attended 18 calls, Roslyn 13, Green Island 1, and Mosgiel nil. None of the outbreaks attended during July could be classed as serious. The causes of the fires were one apartment house, two detached sheds, one detached outhouse, four dwellings, three motor vehicles, one neon sign, and three warehouses. The chimney fires attended were as follows:—Central 14, South Dunedin 6 Roslyn 1, Green Island 1 The inclement weather conditions prevailing during July caused considerable interference with the routine work. There were no cases of sickness or accident among the staff, which was at full strength. The vacancy on the auxiliary staff of the South Dunedin Station caused by the resignation of Fireman J. Hossack was filled by the appointment of L. R. Rillstone, who commenced duty on July 4. The plant and appliances were in the usual good order. Inspections of theatres during performances were made on several occasions during the month, and the reports of the inspecting officers snow that the regulations are being complied with On July 12 the use of the latest "Pyrene' r foam-making branch pipe was demonstrated to the staff of the Central Station. Fire drill, incorporating the use of this foam-making apparatus, was carried out by the staff of Associated Motorists' Petrol Company at the company's premises, Wickliffe street, on July 21. An officer of the brigade was in attendance and reported that the drill was performed in an efficient manner. At the request of the management, an officer visited a departmental store for the purpose of demonstrating to the members of the staff the correct method of operating hand chemical fire extinguishers. The water pressure at the various stations had been:—Central, 9 a.nx, 851 b; 7 p.m.. 1001 b. South Dunedin. 9 a.m., 1131 b; 7 p.m., 1201 b. Roslyn, 9 a.m.. 1471 b; 7 p.m., 1441 b. The annual report and statement of accounts for the year ended March 31, 1939, together with the superintendent's annual report, were placed before the board and adopted. The report stated that the total receipts for the year were £20,740 18s lOd. which, with the addition of the balance of £1458 Is 2d brought forward from the previous year, made a total of *£,u». The amount expended was £19,921 Us 2d, leaving a credit balance of &2£li 8s lOd at the end of the year.
