RAILCAR TO THF RESCUE FAST TRIP TO MAINTAIN CONNECTION (Special to Daily Times) WELLINGTON Aug. 22. Proving its worth in time of emergency, the Aotea. the first of the new standard type of railcars to be built by the New Zealand Railways, made a remarkably fast run from Wellington to Puketutu. near the scene of the wash-out, and back * distance of nearly 600 miles. The railcar was hurriedly prepared last night, and left Wellington at 8.30 to-day with the general manager of railways (Mr G H. Mackley) and the assistant chief engineer (Mr H. C. Lusty). Good time was maintained throughout the long night journey of 292 miles to Puketutu. where the car stopped no longer than was required for an inspection to be made of the wash-out. , The speaker of the House of Representatives (Mr W. E Barnard) and a number of northern oassengers who had left Auckland on the previous night by the twb expresses for Wellington joined the railcar at Puketutu, and the return journey was started at 4.20 a.m. The actual travelling time to Wellington, where the car arrived at 2.13 D.m.. was under nine hours, and the railcar was absent from Wellington for only 17J hours. The crew of the railcar consisted of a guard and two drivers the drivers relieving each other at the controls
