OLGA COELHO
BRAZILIAN SOPRANO Madame Olga Coelho, the Brazilian soprano and guitarist, who will make her Australian and New Zealand premiere in the Concert Chamber, Dunedin, on Saturday, September 2, is said to be one of the few singers who can claim almost diplomatic rank. She travels on a diplomatic passport, and holds .sped ' decree given her by the Government of Brazil, making her the official world propagandist for Brazilian folklore and music.
Madame Coelho is the first person in Brazil ever to receive such a decree. It was intended that she be a pianist, and at the age of six she was set to learn the piano, but she did not like to practise for hours every day She had always wanted to play the guitar, however, and so she took up that, and also singing. During her recent London season, Madame Coelho had the distinction of appearing before Queen Mary at the Brazilian Embassy, and it was shortly after that performance that she was the featured artist, on three occasions, of Empire broadcasts from the British Broadcasting Corporation.
