TUAPEKA COUNTY ROADS

TO THE EDITOR

Sir,—A letter from "One of the risers," referring to the Tuapeka County road—Lawrence-Tuapeka WestCorkscrew road—is long overdue. This road is in a most disgraceful condition, and has been so for years during the winter season, long before the present engineer took office. We hear a great deal of "safety first" on the roads to-day, and I am quite sure if

the Minister of Public Works could only see this particular road, which, apparently the mail-service car has to travel part of the winter (much to the discomfort of passengers), he would see that the Tuapeka County Council did its duty. Are the farmers of this district indifferent because they can travel an upper road, or do they pay insufficient rates? If the county is unwilling to give them a decent road on this route, which they must travel, when the Valley road is blocked, why don t they club together and petition the Minister of Public Works? They could not possibly be turned down. I suggest to some of the " users of the road that they endeavour to procure a good photograph of the Corkscrew at the oresent time and forward it to the Minister of Public Works.—l am, etc., Passenger.
