THE BULLOCK TRACK

PROGRESS OF IMPROVEMENTS ATTITUDE OF AMENITIES SOCIETY Some dissatisfaction with the present stage of the terracing and planting work being done near the Bullock Track was expressed by members of the Dunedin Amenities Society at a meeting of the society yesterday. It was reported by Mr R Fountain that the major part of the clearing work had been done. A start had been made with a wall, but rotten rock and small stones were being used, and the site was on a swampy piece of ground. The society .had agreed to contribute £SO provided the North Dunedin Society could contribute £l5O. Mr J. L. Salmond: We don't intend to Day for a makeshift job. It is an amateur job, but I don't know whether it is just temporary: Mr S. P. Cameron doubted whether it was intended as a permanent job. and it was pointed out that as the wall was being constructed at present it could not be made permanent. A trouble that the society had often experienced was that the City Council rarely carried out work according to plans approved by the society and for which it had granted money. ( Ultimately the meeting deputed the sub-committee which had already consulted with the North Dunedin Society, whose project this was, to meet it again and make it clear that the contribution of £SO would not be made unless the work were, carried out to the society's satisfaction, Members were emuhatic that the construction of a wall as it was at present being carried out definitely was not satisfactory. Gorse on Flagstaff Gratification was expressed with a letter from the town clerk advising that unemployed labour would be used to clear the gorse on Flagstaff. Arbor Day Trees The encouragement of practical interest in Arbor Day children was the motive of Mr James Begg in suggesting that the society should give seeds to schools or selected pupils for planting. Children would be much more interested in. trees that they had grown themselves from seeds he thought. The suggestion was welcomed, and it was decided to communicate it to the Headmasters' Association. Membership Progress A report that 58 new members had been enrolled as the result of the recent appeal was made by the honorarv secretary (Mr A C Cameron) Quite a number of them had expressed appreciation at being asked, he said, and had mentioned that they had not oreviouslv been approached "A newspaper correspondent took umbrage that only 400 appeals were sent out." he added, ' but Derhaps it was not realised that each of the 400 persons approached received a oersonal letter headed and signed, together with a copy of the annua] report, and that this involved a great deal ot gratuitous work." Another 400 or so could be approached another year. The meeting particularly thanked Mr A C. Cameron and Mr John Ash for their efforts in connection with the apDeal. and the chairman said a warm welcome would be given to further new members. The meeting was attended bv Mr Crosby Morris (chairman), Mrs H L Cook Messrs J C Salmond J Ash S P Cameron R Fountain W G Birrell John C Begg. C V Smith. James Begg Simpson and A. C. Cameron (honorary secretary)
