WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Mrs Stewart presided at the meeting of the Seacllff Institute, held on Thursday afternoon. The motto was. "Kind words help the sunshine of the world," and the roll call, "Winter Pudding." The competitions resulted:—Knitted article - Mesdames McKechie and Stewart (equal) 1; best bloom—Mrs Ireland 1. A demonstration on wool rug making, given by Mrs McNeil (Waikouaiti), was much appreciated. The hostesses were Mesdames Ireland, Stewart. McKechie. and Robson.

The members of the Macandrew Bay Institute held their meeting on Thursday last, Mrs Vickers presiding. The motto was "It is good to have plenty of push, but pulling together will get you further." An instructive demonstration on smocking was given by Mrs Small and Mrs Turnbull. The competitions resulted:—Soft toy—Mrs Smallman 1, Mrs Butler 2; best bloom —Mrs Stapleton 1. Mrs Lang 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Mitchell, Yates, Foote, Weir. Hellyer. Quartermain and Dyhberg.

The meeting of the Karitane Institute took the form of a bring-and-buy evening. Mrs Tubman presided The motto was. "Imitate a needle —keep your eyes open, be sharp and stick in," and the roll call was 'How to prevent the middle-age spread." The golden thread talk was given by Mrs Tubman, with two instructive addresses on " Panic at the Sight of Blood " and "Care of Cut Flowers." The competitions resulted:—Worked tray cloth: Mrs Kennedy and Mrs Milne (equal) 1. Mrs Fricker and Mrs Tubman (equal) 2. Premier bloom: Mrs Milne 1, Mrs Tubman 2. The hostesses were Mrs Blanc and Mrs Gibbs.
