SOUTH AUCKLAND BEATS TARANAKI fPER United Press Association; NEW PLYMOUTH. Aug. 13. South Auckland beat Taranaki in a representative Rugby League match at New Plymouth on Saturday by 11 points (three tries, ons converted), to 9 points (three tries).
Godwits wore heard over the northern shores of the Manukau Harbour on Saturday nlsht. and. judging from the volume of their cries, a corre■oondent has suggested that they were a body of migrant birds, and not merely a few which had remained from last season (states the New Zealand Herald). "August is unusually early for the birds." he writes. " but not unheard of. and very earl„v arrivals reputedly herald an early spring." The opinion that if godwits were observed on the Manukau during this month, thev nrobablv comprised a flock which had remained in New Zealand during the winter, was given bv Mr G. Turbott. ornithologist at the Auckland War Memorial Museum. Godwits generally returned to New Zealand from Siberia in October or November, he said. As far as was known, a few stayed in this country each winter.
