Wolf, Alastcr I. T. Wolfe, Allss AI. E. Woodlands, Airs A. K. Wyllye RUDDERLESS VESSEL A vessel of distinction is the motor ship Vecta, built by John T. Thofnycroft and Co.. Ltd., for the Rod Funnel Line, Southampton. The vessel is without rudder, blades being used for both propelling and steering. Many small vessels aro propelled In such fashion—the Voith-Schnelder system—but the Vecta, with a gross tonnage of 621 in a length of 200 fast, Is the largest commercial ship to be so driven. The Red Funnel Line require " handy ships ” for the general utility purposes they serve. They provide it link between Southampton and the Isle of Wight and act as tenders for passengers embarking or disembarking from ships using the port and for. the transport of motor cars. The ability to manoeuvre quickly Is essential; the Voith-Schnelder system claims to do (his. Each of the twin Voith-Schnelder propellers fitted consists of six vortical blades of aerofoil section arranged In the stern of the vessel. Each blade of the propellers revolves round the periphery of a drum which Is housed within the hull. During motion the pitch and angle of these blades can he altered at will, with a result that not only can the speed of the vessel he varied while maintaining a constant engine speed, but the ship can be steered by the propellers. no rudder being needed. An important consideration Is that the vessel steers as readily at low speeds as when moving at her normal rate, and with equal facility astern or ahead. It Is also possible to mano-uvre the vessel laterally without any fore or aft motion. All these movements are controlled by one steering wheel resembling an ordinary motor car wheel, and two levers on quadrants in the wheclhouse on the bridge. During trials the speed of the vessel was lifted from dead-slow to 10-12 knots, and a complete turn effected In less than one length and a quarter. Increasing to approximately 14 knots, a full turn was made in less than two lengths, while It was noticeable that at all speeds the ship Immediately responded to all movements of the " motor car control.” OVERSEAS VESSELS FOR OTAGO Malmoa (due August 15). —Left Liverpool June 17 for Auckland, Napleir, Wellington.
