Mr and Mrs Duff have been In business for the past 10 years, and during that time they greatly extended an old-es-tablished business. Their many friends will wish them well in their retirement, for, owing to health reasons, it is Mr 'Duff’s intention to take a long holiday before considering entering into business again. Labour Party Bali The attendance at the annual ball of the Balclutha branch of the Labour Party, held in the Britannia Theatre on Wednesday night, was not so large as had been expected. This was due to the wet night and the fact that the ball had been postponed previously. Dancers enjoyed the extra space, and the ball was very enjoyable. Excellent music was provided by the Caledonian Dance Band, and the supper was in the capable hands of Mr Ken Evans. The M.C.’s were C. Garside and F. Washington. MILTON Borough Council The monthly meeting of the Milton Borough Council, held on Wednesday night, was presided over by the Deputy Mayor (Cr W. J. Cockburn). The newly-elected councillor, Mr Hugh Graham McClymont, was welcomed to the council table. Before commencing the ordinary business the Deputy Mayor referred to the lols suffered in the deaths of exCouncillor J. Littlejohn and Mr H. H. Wilkinson, who had faithfully reported council meetings over a long period of years. A motion of sympathy with, the relatives was carried.

At the last meeting the Milton Fire Brigade requested a quotation for extending the water main in George street to the school grounds for the use of the brigade for practices and competition work.—The estimated price was £55 12s for a distance of three chains nine feet and it was decided to notify the board accordingly. The Works Committee was authorised to meet the members of Toko Riding on the Bruce County Council with regard to ditches at the northern end of the borough. In connection with flooding at the northern end of the borough the Works Committee had been guided by a report submitted by Mr F. J. Williams in 1924, wherein he suggested that the council should place beyond doubt that what is known as Finch’s ditch is vested in the, council, and it was agreed that the Requisite steps be taken to have this done. The borough foreman was given power to cast a concrete channel for filling in Byar’s ditch at the southern end of the borough. It was recommended that the New Zealand Railways be charged Is 6d per 1000 gallons of water for the supply to the refreshment rooms, with a minimum of £5 per annum, the department to pipe from the borough boundary. Cr McClvmont was appointed to the Reserves Committee, vice Cr W. H. Wells, resigned. The Deputy Mayor reported on the recent conference of mayors of rural local bodies, and it was agreed to loin up with the association if it was formed, the next meeting of which has been fixed for September 8. Committee’s Reports

The Finance Committee reported that the credit balance was £894 0s 2d, while expenditure totalled £4OO 6s sd. Accounts recommended for payment amounted to £l7l 5s 4d. The Fairfax Cemetery account showed a credit of 6s 9d, with one outstanding account of £1 17s 6d. The Reserves Committee reported that 150 macrocarpa trees had been procured for planting as a shelter belt at the cemetery, and a start made with the work. A start had also been made with planting this year’s quota of pinus insignis trees at the borough reserve. The borough foreman s report showed that five burst water pipes had been repaired during the month. The men had been engaged nrindpally in fencing and planting trees at the reserve.

Flooding in the Borough Owing to the heavy rain after the snowstorm recently, there was a quick thaw which caused flooding in the low areas, and (he channels and drains could not cope with the extra burden

and caused flooding throughout a certain section of the town, and the borough foreman reported to Wednesday night’s meeting of the Milton Borough Council that there was a natural watercourse from the 2ft 6in culvert in Johnston street to Finch's ditch, and it was found that the ditch and pipe across District road were inadequate to carry the extra water. He suggested that the pipes across, the road should be enlarged to 3ft or 3ft 6in, and Finch’s ditch deepened and widened another foot, and this would save any flooding in the Springfield road area.

The source of the flooding in Dryden street appeared to arise in District road. About halfway between the old English cemetery and Robinson’s corner there was a 12in culvert under the road, and this was too small to carry the storm water. He suggested that it should be increased to two feet and laid under the road at an angle of 45deg. It was at present laid at right angles to the roadway, and impedes the flood waters, causing it to overflow and course down through Mr Robinson’s paddocks to an open ditch in Springfield road. After crossing the road in a 12in pipe it ran down the paddocks to Dryden street open ditch. These two clauses were referred back to the Works Committee for a report. In connection with the flooding in Chaucer street, the foreman stated that the cause appeared to be in a small water course in Mr W. Drinnan’s property. About six chains from Springfield road there was a ditch running east and west and the only , outlet he could find was running south and discharged into an open ditch in Springfield road and then into a 9in pipe at the corner of Chaucer street, but owing to the bad state of the ditch it was inadequate to carry the flood water which flooded the road and then rah down the street. —The report was adopted. Mr W. H. Hitchon wrote drawing attention, to the serious flooding to his and neighbouring properties after the heavy snowfall recently.—The matter was referred to the Works Committee for attention.
