DAVIS CUP MATCH AUSTRALIA v. CUBA SEABRIGHT, Aug. 9. (Received Aug. 10, at 11.30 p!m.) In an interview with the Australian Associated Press Hopman said: “ While the tie between Australia and Cuba is a foregone conclusion, due to the Cubans’ unfamiliarity with grass, the tie will be interesting to Australia because the chief umpire will be Ben Dwight, chairman of the United States Lawn Tennis Umpires’ Association, who was in charge of the umpiring arrangements last year, when foot faults were called on Quist, possibly costing Australia the cup. Mr Dwight, who is anxious to avoid a repetition, has promised to watch Quist carefully against Cuba. Thus Quist, in addition to the ordinary hazards of matches, will be undergoing a foot fault test which will be early enough to permit him to correct any trouble if necessary.” Quist practised for half an hour with Hopman, remaining on the baseline throughout. His- strokes were accurate, but power was lacking, due to his illness. The Cubans are reported to be planning to make Quist run as much as possible because of his condition. Bromwich played a set with Crawford, outing and netting frequently. The Australians are expected to defeat the Cubans easily, but they need more competition before facing Jugoslavia. Hopman announced that he was pairing with Crawford in the National Doubles. The pairings in the Mixed Doubles will be Bromwich and Mme Mathieu, Hopman and Miss Marble, Crawford and Miss Nuthall. Quist will not be playing. AMERICAN PLAYERS SEVEN SELECTED RYE, Aug. 9. (Received Aug. 10, at 11.35 p.m.) Mr Pate selected the following seven players, from whom four will be chosen to defend the Davis Cup: Riggs, Parker, McNeill, Grant, Wood, Cooke and Mako. Concerning the exact composition of the team Mr Pate said; “ I do not intend to make an announcement until the last minute. Keep the Australians guessing is our motto. The tennis editor of the Naw York Daily News says: “As the Doubles situation stands now it looks like either a McNeill and Parker or a Riggs and Cooke combination.”
