REFUGEE PROBLEM
POVERTY-STRICKEN JEWS HUNDREDS REACH SMYRNA SMYRNA, Aug. 9. Six hundred poverty-stricken Jewish refugees whom the Italians refused to allow to disembark at Rhodes, arrived here on the steamship Panama. HAVEN IN PALESTINE PRESSURE ON BRITAIN PARIS, Aug. 9. The American delegates to the world Zionist Conference forecast a big campaign to force Britain to reopen Palestine to Jewish migrants. NOT ALLOWED TO LAND SMYRNA, Aug. 10. (Received Aug. 11, at 1.45 a.m.) The Turkish authorities refused to permit six hundred refugees to land from the steamer, which is unable to take them elsewhere owing to being without fuel. r The refugees embarked at Constanza, and have been at sea many weeks in a hopeless quest for a port. The vessel also lacks money for repairs, food, and other necessities. ..
