LETTER FROM PRISONER

DISCHARGED MAN DETECTED MISSIVE SECRETED IN HAND (Feb United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Aug. 9. Charged with attempting to convey a letter out of Auckland prison this morning, Henry Haddock, a seaman, aged 25, appeared before Mr J. Morling. S.M.. in the Police Court. Mr W. T. Leggett, superintendent of the Auckland prison, said that Haddock had been serving a sentence in the prison and was due for release this morning. When he was passing through the discharge room he was searched and in his possession was found a letter written by another prisoner to a person in Christchurch concerning the alleged secretion of stolen property. "This is looked on rather seriously." Mr Leggett said. The accused said it had been his first time in prison. He had been sentenced for ship desertion. He had no intention of bringing the letter outside but was going to give it to the chief warden. Mr Leggett: That is not so. It was secreted in his hand and he was abusive to the officer who found it. The accused was fined £5, in default 10 days' imprisonment. He was not allowed time to obtain the money.
