The .Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting was continued in very cold weather, but there was only a suggestion of. rain during the afternoon, although'at the concluding part of the card the-weather looked anything but promising'. The track provided much better going than on the first day., and the attendance was remarkably good considering 'the uninviting nature of the.weather. Fine Art was a strong order for the King'f Handicap, and he won all the way and never caused his supporters any anxiety at any stage of the journey. ~.,,,. -.'.,'' •'•>;,■ Improvers' Handicap Swordsman started favourite for the, Improvers' Handicap and won by a narrow margin. He began well, and, after. being. : a, bit slow away, Colonel Grattan rah'into second place. They led Gallant Knight and Glenrossie. Fine Art had Colonel Grattan beaten at the' home turn, where Marsceres and Gallant Knight drew up, Fine" Art stalled' them off. and ;won nicely by a neck from 'Marsceres, who beat Gallant Knight by a length Graham Direct, Colonel Grattan. Glenrossie and Evicus were next Colonel Grattan will be improved by the race - ■ Lincoln Handicap An outsider in Sports Review put in a fast run in the.last half-mile of the Lincoln Handicap.and raced past. Attain, Superior Rank and Colonel Axworthy Jq lead them into the straight. Sports Review kept on to win by two lengths from Pecunia, who beat Doubt by two "lengths. Attain, Dancing Pirate and Ivy Petersen' were the next. The winner paid over one-third of a century. After going about, two furlongs' and a-half Loyal Avis tangled and fell and brought down College Boy.; E. C McDermott, the driver of Loyal Avis, was removed to the hospital and found to be suffering from slight concussion Avon Handicap T'e Kahu went to a break in the first furlong of the Avon Handicap. Nell Vdlo lost a lot of ground at the start Kahu led Gerfalcon, Lady Sonoma, Royal Romance and Lament. Te Kahu continued on to near the home turn, where Gerfalcon shot away and won by three lengths from Royal Romance, who'beat Lament by half a length.; Filo Peter.,who had put in a break, was fourth, with Helens Bay. Nell Voio, Te Kahu and Lady Sonoma next. Captain Bolt-and Teviot Downs were pulled up ■ " Canterbury Handicap Southern Chief broke up badly at the start of the Canterbury Handicap and' Waitaki Power .was showing the way to Red Ranger and Toorak after going a couple' of furlongs, and they' were joined by Icevus, After going a lap the leader was Waitaki Power, closely attended by Red Ranger Icevus, Horsepower and Toorak, who was boxed on the rails Donald Dhii put in a fast rim a.long the, back and joined the front rankers. Red Ranger took charge after entering the straight;'heading off Icevus arid Horse-' power: Toorak then came with a fast run. but, Red Ranger-kept clear and won by a length and; a-half Toorak was two lengths in frbnt of Icevus. and Waitaki Povlrer finished close up. Jackaranda, was fifth and Southern" Chief showed a lot of pace to finish next in front of Donald Dhu and Horsepower. Dash Handicap Cantata made the running in "the Dash Handicap and Marsceres. when handy to the leaders at the end of half a mile, hit the rails and dropped

his driver. Cantata led along from Frisco Boy, Evicus, and King's Play, and when well in line for home the last-named cut down the leaders and won in good style from Frisco Boy. Cantata, Ironside. HANDICAPS FOR TO-MORROW (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 9. Following are the handicaps for the third day of the Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting:— MIDWINTER HANDICAP,

October 2.—Ohinemuri J.C More Ground Lady ■ Montana was finishing on in the Winter Cup and will be better suited if tried over more ground at the meeting. So will Ned Cuttle. Money for Majority . ' There was a pool of £13,928 on the Winter Cup (£5643 10s to win and £8284 10s for a place). The favourite, Majority, -carried £1213 for a win and £1034 for a place. Nightcalm Nightcalm is not a boy's horse, particularly when a good deal of dead weight has to be put up. He may show to better advantage than in the Winter Cup if a strong rider is in the saddle. Three on End Catalogue won the Winter Cup so easily that he must have been unbeatable in the rare with ordinary luck in the running. He has put up the most remarkable performance of winning three times on end. All going well Catalogue will be taken over to Australia to have a second shot at the Melbourne Cud. Dictate Dictate is an unlucky horse and has several times been placed in important races. He came with a strong run at the finish of the Winter Cup. which carried him into second place. Dictate looks a bit big in condition and should be improved by the race Big Jumpers Cottingham is one of the biggest jumpers ever seen racing over the Riccarton country, but in that respect must give way to Beau Cavalier, who lumped so big that he appeared likely to beat himself by extravagant jumping. The impact of landing in a big jump probably contributed to Nottingham breaking down. Speed in Steeples The time put up by Padishah, who comfortably won the Grand National Steeples in 6min 57sec, was beaten by Oakleish 10.7 when he won irt 6mm 55 Peter Maxwell 9.1 won in 6min 55 3-ssec and Snowfall , 9.3 in Cmin .58 l-ssec. Padishah, however, carried considerably more weight than pither of the above-named horses and very probably "would have created a new record if necessary. A Big Lift The impressive manner in which Padishah won the Grand National Steeplechase is shown by th*i hanmcapSe raising him 221 b. Slayer meets Padishah on 151 b better terms in the Beaufort Steeples, but it is more than doubtful if the weights would bring them together. Padishah is a stronglybuilt horse well up to weight, whereas Slaver is a comparatively small horse, and the increase in weight would affect him more than the ton-weight. They are. however, not likelv to meet as Padishah will very probablv start in the Grand National Hurdles, with A. E Ellis in the saddle. Cottineham Cottingham was fullv twenty lengths clear of Padishah when he cracked up in the Grand National Steeples, and was apparently going comfortably and jumping well. The effort to go win Cottingham completely settled Gold Wren, who was well beaten when making a feeble attempt to cross the first

of the stand double. Bar his mishap. Cottingham must have been in the money, as the pace at which he was travelling could be maintained to the end and still leave something in reserve. A. Bare Record Padishah won the Grand National Hurdles last year and followed with a win in the Grand National Steeples. Haydn won the Grand National Hurdle* in 1901 and the Grand National Steeples in 1902. They are the only winners of the Grand National Hurdles who followed. on with a win in the Grand National Steeples. Paritutu •was second in the Grand National Hurdles in 1907 and 1908. and won the Grand-National'Steeples in 1911 and also ran second in the latter race in 1912. Aurora Borealis won the Grand National Steeples in 1930, and also finished second in the Grand National Hurdles. Padishah holds a good chance of landing both the big events this year. Winner In Australia Hilton, a winner at Caulfleld for Mr W. R, Kemball last Saturday, is a justturned four-year-old black gelding by Beau Pere from that useful Chief Ruler mare Awaken, whose wins included the Avondale Autumn Handicap and two races in succession one day at Hawera. The first foal of his dam. he was bought by Mr Kemball at the Trentham sales for 275gns. and he is proving a good investment at that price. Failnre of Favourites In the flat races decided on the first day of the Grand National meeting favourites got a rather bad run. The size of the fields did not assist any horse .to make good, particularly if he was amongst the top-weights. A strong favourite in Majority was slow away in the Winter Cup, and although he made a forward move when rounding the home turn he faded out in the straight, aid giving a start in such a field proved beyond him. Strip, who started favourite for the Paparua Handicap faded out after looming up with the leaders inside the distance. Strip's chance was not assisted by having to start 15 at the barrier. Indian Sun, who started favourite for the Cashmere Plate, drew I'9 at the barrier and did not appear near the leaders until reaching the straight. He struggled on, but could not do better than finish third. Lady Tinkle, who started favourite for the Avonhead Handicap, made a bold show, but Raana finished too strongly for her. Green Cape's Double Green Cape's further success in the Australian Hurdles at Caulfleld lasc Saturday stamped him as completely outstanding among the hurdlers in Australia at present. Five, weeks ago he won the V.R.C. Grand National Hurdles and the following Saturday, instead of taking on the Grand National Steeplechase, a race he had won 12 months previously, he stepped out again as a hurdler and secured first money in the Doulta Galla Hurdles as the result of a successful protest against Cheery Jack, who had finished half a, head irt front of him. It is not often that the winner of the premier steeplechase in one season becomes the crack hurdler the next season, the order generally being reversed. Other horses who have won the V.R.C. Grand National and the V.A.T.C. Australian Hurdles in one year have been The Agent (1885), Tim Swiveller (1893), Realm (1906), Arquebuse (1911), Mosstrooper (1930). and Pooley Bridge (1936). Green Cape's trainer, W. Burke, has had a phenomenally successful year with his jumpers. He also took the Grand National Steeplechase with his own horse, Giant Killer, and undoubtedly he will be after the fourth "leg" of the Winter's four big jumping races next Saturday, when he has Giant Killer and Nevizes in the Australian Steeplechase at Caulfleld. Not Retiring It was rumoured that M. McCarten might retire after another year's riding and take up training (says "Pilot"). McCarten denied it was so. and why should he retire when he continues to do so well and,is still at an age that makes him a youngster by comparison with some of -England's leading jockeys? Besides, there is a lot more money and less worry in being a successful jockey than a leading trainer. Even though the. latter' may have a team of, say, 25 horses, there is not much profit in it for him. even at £3 10s a horse per week, unless he can turn out winners and is prepared to bet a bit. On the other hand, a - jockey. ; is always certain of something, even for, a losing mount, ana. if he should win a good race, hi* reward is likoly to'be greater than that of the trainer who has had the worry of fitting the horse for the race. While his services are still in demand, it is an unwise move, from a monetary standpoint, for any jockey to stop riding in order to take up training. McTigue had a successful afternoon at Addington yesterday, when he won three races, including the principal event of the day. Likes the Front Mark . Pilot Peter has a fine turn of speed, but appears to race best from the limit. A Big Team C. S. Donald has a big team engaged at Addington. It includes Tan John, Captain Bolt and Wahnooka (trotters), end De la Paix, Superior Rank, Plutus, Jackaranda, Repeal, Marlene and Carver Doone (pacers). Close to Best Form Salalon, who is now trained at Addington by J. Young, is close to his best form, and should win again soon in his class. Position of Small Clubs. At the annual meeting of delegates to the Trotting Conference on Monday. Mr N. R. Wilkinson (Cheviot) appealed for support for the smaller clubs, which were facing a hard battle in trying to make ends meet He suggested that small country clubs should be allowed 'o hold an occasional meeting on one of the metropolitan tracks, or should be subsidised bv the more prosperous town clubs. The president (Mr H. F. Nicoll) said it was the dut\ of country clubs to provide sport for the country people. If the residents of any district did not support their clubs, then it was quite evident that the soort was not wanted there. He advised Mr Wilkinson, with all other delegates, to continue to fight for extra permits hat in time might be- granted. • It should also be remembered that city clubs had to face big overhead expenditure and there was not much chance of assistance from this source. RACING IN AUSTRALIA WIN FOR HOUSEMASTER (United Press Association) «By Electric Telegraph —Copyright) SYDNEY, Aug 9. (Received Aug. 10, at 0.45 a.m.) At the Ascot races to-day Housemaster won the Welter Mile, while Militiades was third in the Flying Welter Handicap. Prince Pombal refused to leave the barrier in the Jumpers Flat Race, and his stable connections will not persevere with him any longer.

SECOND DAY AT RICCARTON THE FIELDS FOR TO-DAY (Special to Daii/k Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 9. The second card for the Grand National meeting contains some good fields, although that for the Beaufort Steeples is on the small side. The field for the Grand National Hurdles will probably amount to a dozen at least, and a good race should be supplied by'Padishah, Aussie Ra, Charade, and King Rey. The following may be amongst those fancied for their engagements:— Hunt Cup Steeples.—Bridegroom, El Caballo. Sumner Handicap.—Windsor Chief, The Wrecker, Wagner. Beaufort Steeples.—Hanover. Slayer. Woolston Handicap.— Le Toquet, Flame Queen, Night Pal, or Astaire. Grand National Hurdles.—Padishah, Aussie Ra, Charade, or King Rey. Spreydon Hurdles.—Chat, Eegorrah, Tutor. Islington Handicap.—Ned Cuttle, Lady Montana, Lowenberg, or Tidewaiter. August Handicap.—Majority, Counterblast, Tooley Street, or Mishna. The fields are as follows: 11.32 HUNT CUP STEEPLECHASE, Of £3OO. About two miles and a-half.

PROPOSED TRIP FOR PADISHAH TURNED DOWN BY OWNER (Special to DAaY Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 9. There seemed a prospect this week that Padishah might go to England to contest the Liverpool Grand National:: Steeplechase. A wealthy New Zear lander who contemplates an early trip to England approached the owner on the subject, offering to pay all expenses if Mr Hennah would allow him to take the horse Home on the condition that he was given a lialf interest in the horse for the trip. Mr Hennah was considering the subject, but said to-day that the horse was too old. Had he been younger he might have, agreed and given him a years hunting while he became acclimatised, but at nine years he is now considered too old to entertain the project.
