WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Reports ol meetings of branches Are requested but they should be furnished promptly, for the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be promised. The Kaka Point Institute meeting was held on August 2, Miss Bates presiding. The motto was, "All of us are always going to do better to* morrow, and we would, too, if we started to-day," and the roll call was, "A recipe for a cheese dish." The competition—date loaf—resulted;—Mrs Bates 1, Mrs Prentice 2, Mrs Aitkenhea<'. 3. A demonstration on " Tatting " was given by Miss Bates. A letter from the Link was read by Miss Watson, and Mrs Prentice gave a reading on "Native Birds." The hostesses were Mrs Bates and Mrs Prentice.

The Tahakopa Institute held the August meeting on Thursday last, with Mrs C. Birss in the chair. The motto was, "Borrow trouble for yourself if that's your nature, but don't lend it tq your neighbours." The roll call, "A schoolboy howler," provided a highly diverting interlude. Miss Skey demonstrated on "Tatting," and showed several specimens of the work in various stages. Mrs C. Dunlop served supper,/after which Mrs C. Martin introduced a competition, which was won by Mrs Sioddart. The monthly competitions resulted:-—Best bloom—Mrs Stoddart 1; sponge rollMrs Stott 1.

The monthly meeting of the Papakaio Institute was presided over by Mrs Odell. The roll call was, "My favourite picnic spot," the popular choice being McCulloch's Bridge. The competition resulted:—Apron—Mrs Wilson 1, Miss H. Ludemann 2; bottled apricots—Mrs Borrie and Miss Borrie (equal) 1, Miss H. Ludemann 3. Mrs Hurst gave an interesting display of hyacinths grown in fibre. Misses Paton and Wilson were the hostesses.

The August meeting of the Sutton Institute, held on Saturday last, was presided over by Mrs Pedofsky One new member was welcomed. The meeting took the form of a "Maori Day," a number of members wearing appropriate symbols. Mrs Kinsman spoke on the motto. "Mehemea. Ka Tuoho ahau, me maunga teitei" (Should I bow my head, let it be to a lofty mountain). Each member told a humorous Maori story for the roll call. Three members, suitably dressed, rendered the part songs, "Hoea Ra" and "Haere Ra." A baking competition—cockles—resulted as follows: Miss O. Terry 1, Misses I. Kidd and O. Terry 2, Miss J. McHarjiy 4. A second competition—jumbled Otago Maori place names—was won by Mrs Harraway. The meeting closed with the song "Home, Little Maori. Home." Mrs Harraway and Misses Isla Kidd and Olive Terry served afternoon tea.
