MATCH WITH CHRISTCHURCH Arrangements have now been completed for the Otago-Canterbury match, which the Otago Association earlier in the season expressed a wish to have played at Oamaru—selected because of its comparative accessibility to both - centres and because of its excellent facilities. Advice has been received that the match will be played next Saturday, and the following team has been selected to represent Otago:— •Men.—Abbott. Swallow. Ferguson. Steven, t Women.—Misses Angell, Errldge, • Buchler and Leith. TEAM IN AUSTRALIA Retorts are now coming to hand of the progress of the New Zealand team at present touring. Australia. At «" the reception accorded to them on their arrival at Melbourne on July 24 they were welcomed by this Lord Mayor , (Mr A. W. Coles) and Mr Holt, M.H.R. and they were later entertained at luncheon by the Victorian Badminton . Association. Later they left for Tas- ., mania;, where they played matches at Burhiis. Launceston and. Hobart. They retunted to Melbourne on August 1. «nd plkyed.Victoria at the Collingwood ToWn Hall that, night. The team then divided for a few days. . Half vvent to Adelaide.. where South Australia wai beaten, and the other half commenced 'a tour of Victorian provincial centres. The test match against Australia was played at the Collingwood Town Hall on Tuesday and Wednesday nights of this week. , ' 'A suggestion that the team might • visit Canberra and meet a. parliamentarian side was made by Mr Holt at the reception at the Melbourne Town Hall \4x& July 24. Mr Holt said that : there was i badminton court at Parliament House,' Canberra, and that a team of politicians might be arranged. Milne, N. Williamson. This match will be played on Dunedin courts 2 and 3. : SOUTHLAND MATCH COM. MENT , Otago was beaten by Southland on .Saturday by only the narrowest of margins, each province winning eight rubbers, but Southland winning 19 games (436 points) to Otago's 18 (430 points). There was a large gallery of spectators at the Zealandia Hall, and the standard of play is reported to • have been high. A critic writing in the Southland News says that the teams were evenly matchedj as the scores indicate, but that Otago was generally the better team, Southland's win resulting largely from the team's : fitness. , Otago led 3—3 in the Singles, which were played first, Southland halved'the Doubles, and late in the evening won three of the four Mixed Doubles events, this section tipping the scales in their favour. Prominent Pliyers 4 The outstanding player of the evening was Ferguson, Otago's third man, who Was very fit, and played keen, forceful, and accurate badminton. He smashed severely, and concealed the direction well; while his powerful drives from low angles were a characteristic feature of his game when he was in trouble. Miss O. Erridge also distinguished herself for Otago, and, like Ferguson, went through the night undefeated. Her Singles match against Miss . Cutt, was particularly interest'ing to Swatch.: In overhead power Miss • Cutt ■ was somewhat ~ more strongly equipped, but' the mobility of the Dunedin girl enabled her ■t to return many difficult shots. When » she had a chance to attack Miss Erridge used a serviceable smash and V placed her shots with accuracy and .„ discernment. The first game was set c at 9-all. and it was won by Miss Erridge after some neat drop-shots had , found the.side-lines. Miss Buchler showed herself as an-. » other good tactician without great power of shot. She quickly led Miss .5 Woods B—l in the . first game, dis- • playing considerable ability at catching her opponent oh the wrong foot with a reverse smash and a clear to back- . court,'-?-., ? . Surprise Defeat ' A surprise defeat was that of W. ' Abbott,-present Otago champion, who took the first game from McCallum at 15—8, and went on to lead 11—7 in • the second. Up till that stage he had i- called the tune both in variety of shot G and in strategy and he appeared to be :' a certain winner., Then McCallum H took 12 points in a row to secure the second game and lead s—o in the third. Abbott made some response, McCallum ran out at .15—9. The change in the L match was the result of three factors—t Abbotts concentration lapsed in the ' second game,-his physical resources ! ' were not, equal to the .task in the third

game, and McCallum, after a nervous start, greatly improved till he was playing accurately and forcefully at the finish. ' Glennie and Swallow had a long and really exciting game. Swallow was the more finished player, with greater power overhead. He led 12—4 in the first game, smashed his racket, and was never happy thereafter with borrowed implements. Glennie improved rapidly after early inaccuracy and he ultimately captured the first game at 17—14. They had a great fight for the second, and when the game was set at 14-all Glennie led 3—o, but Swallow showed courage and resource in taking the game at 18—16. and the third game at 15—12. There were many fine rallies at all stages. In the third game Swallow maintained a flow of high and deep clearing shots, and this move appeared to turn the tide in his favour. The Doubles There were some fine exhibitions of plav in the Doubles matches. Swallow and Ferguson gave a specially good display, having an advantage over their opponents in their clever and fast retrieving of hard shots Misses Erridge and Buchler also gave a fine exhibition. They used a side-by-side formation, but were continually on the move, their backing up being constant and well thought out. Ferguson and Miss Erridge also made up a good pair in the Mixed Doubles Balmacewen v. AH Saints A team representing the Balmacewen Club also visited Invercargill on Saturday to play All Saints and was defeated by nine games (21 sets) to three games. (12 sets). The scores with All Saints' names first, were:— Men's Doubles.—Dillon and Smith beat Steven and Dawe 15—9, 10—15, 15 —8; Wren and Braxton beat Neill and Morris 15—11, 15—1; Buchanan and McKay beat Long and Dawe 14—15. 15—14. 15—14.
