Mr A. C. Cameron returned from a short business visit to Christchurch by the first express from Christchurch yesterday. Mr J. E. Macassey was a passenger for Wellington by the through express yesterday. Mr N. D. Anderson left for Christchurch by the through express yesterday.

The Diploma of Laryngology and Otology has been conferred jointly with the Royal College of Physicians, upon Dr N. T. P. Hardie, M. 8., Ch.B., N.Z. (Otago, Auckland and Golden square. London). Mr J. Roberts, of Christchurch, the New Zealand workers' representative to the International Labour Conference, left England on Saturday for a 20 days' tour of Russia.

Sir George Elliot, formerly chairman of the New Zealand local board of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd.. has been appointed a member of the London board of the company. Mr D. G. Kennedy, a New Zealander who is administrative officer of the Ellice Islands, is expected to arrive at Auckland from Sydney shortly after spending a year at Oxford University. He is returning to his duties.

Mr J. M. Wilson, headmaster of the Maori Hill School, Dunedin, has been appointed headmaster of the Waimate Primary School, and will take up his new position on September 4. Dr A. H. Mclndoe, of Dunedin. has been awarded by the Royal College of Surgeons of England a Hunterian Professorship. Dr Mclndoe (reports our London correspondent, writing on July 17) has for some time been assistant to Sir Harold Gillies, the famous plastic surgeon.

Mr C. O. Eyre, sub-Collector of Customs in Wellington, has been appointed Collector of Customs in Christchurch. Mr Eyre was sub-collector in Christchurch until four years and a-half ago. when he was transferred to be collector at Napier, later being transferred to Wellington. Before commencing the business of the annual meeting of the Otago Centre of the Piping and Dancing Association last evening the president, Mr Albert Wheeler, made feeling reference to the loss" suffered by ■the recent death of Mrs E. H. Clarke, of Palmerston. For many years one of the principal prizes at the centre's annual championship gathering has been the David Ross Memorial Prize, and Mrs Clarke was a member of the family who gave the prize. A suitable motion of sympathy was passed. A Polish graduate in agriculture. Mr Henrv Goot, has arrived at Massey Agricultural College to take up work in animal husbandry, especially on wool. Mr Goot is from the University of Krakow, where he specialised in animal breeding. He was commended to the college bv Professor Romon Prawochenski, a leading exponent of scientific animal-breeding in Poland, and his coming to New Zealand has been sponsored by the Palmerston North branch of the Rotary Club. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. E. Parry) has appointed to the Port Chalmers Physical Welfare and Recreation Committee the following:—The Mayor. Mr T. Scollay. and Crs W. Leftwich and W. D. Mead, representing the Port Chalmers borough, and Messrs T. A. Armstrong. A. Campbell, D. Forsyth, the Rev. J. G. Dunn. Mrs T. Scollay and Miss M. Morgan.

North-bound passengers by Union Airways yesterday morning were Messrs A. Tilbury. A. Chin. Ming Gook. Kim Yen for Christchurch, Messrs A. Smillie. N. C. Speight. A. L. Pethybridge. Mrs H. Adams for Wellington. Mr J. W, Anderson for Auckland. South-bound passengers, who were landed at Waianakarua. were Mr R. Ewing. from Wellington, and Messrs J. F. Henderson and L. C. Hazlett from Christchurch.

Mr G. L. Anderson, who has been attached to the staff division on the head office. Wellington, for nearly 20 years, has been appointed (says a Press Association telegram from Wellington) assistant staff superintendent of the New Zealand Railways. He succeeds Mr A. J. Levick. who was appointed staff superintendent when Mr A. Urauhart rejired on superannuation recently, after 40 years' service, with the department. Mr Anderson joined the service in Auckland in 1902 ana received his early training at various offices and stations in that district. He was appointed assistant relieving officer in 1913. and after serving in that capacity for two years, was. transferred to a position as staff clerk in the office of the district traffic manager, Auckland. After five years in Auckland, Mr Anderson was transferred to me head office in Wellington, where he was attached to the staff division, and has occupied in turn the positions of clerk, senior clerk and staff assistant. This experience, allied to his extensive knowledge of station and district office work, it is stated, well qualifies him for the important position to which lie has now been appointed.

A large and representative gathering of the staff of the Otago Hospital Board met at the Dunedin Hospital on Tuesday to bid farewell popular house steward. Mr G. H. Hollingworth, who has recently *een appointed house manager to the worm Canterbury Hospital Board at Christchurch. Mr Dove expressed the feelings of the Hospital Board and of the sr.aff generally when he congratulated Mr Hollingworth on his new appointment, and said that by his departure the board was losing a valuable servant and the members of the start a real friend. He referred to his being the son of the late Mr F. Hollingworth. for many years an esteemed member ot the staff, and said that Mr G. Hollingworth had nobly carried on the old tradition, and asked him to accept from the staff the gift of a silver tea service and canteen of cutlery, to be a reminder of his days at. Dunedin Hospital. In reply. Mr Hollingworth thanked the Hospital Board and the members of the staff for the consideration he had received during his time as house steward, and said it was with regret that he was severing his connection with Dunedin Hospital. He also expressed the wish that the new house steward would have the same support and co-operation that had been extended to him during his years of office in the position. Opportunity was then taken to congratulate Mr R. Gordon on his appointment to the position vacated by Mr Hollingworth.
