SHIP DESERTER
TWO WEEKS IN GAOL COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE (Per United Press Association; AUCKLAND, Aug. 9. William Philip Mahoney, aged 24, a steward, appeared in the Police Court this morning and admitted having deserted from the steamer Akaroa on May 23. Sub-inspector Pender said that after deserting Mahoney went to Taumarunui and worked for a timber company. He joined the special military reserve and was transferred to Narrow Neck Camp at Auckland. He had to«leave there owing to an injury to a foot and now had a position in Auckland. Yesterday when he heard the police were looking for him he gave himself up. Questioned by the magistrate (Mr Morling) Mahoney had nothing to say. " It is not fair to the shipping company to desert from your ship and leave it short-handed," said the magistrate. "Prison is the only thing in this case. You will be sentenced to two weeks' imprisonment."
