SHOPLIFTING CHARGES
TWO WOMEN SENTENCED ONE MONTH IN GAOL (Per United Press Association) HASTINGS, Aug. 8. "Shoplifting is very prevalent and very difficult to detect, and in this instance I am not at all satisfied that they merely yielded to sudden temptation, but rather that it was a case of an organised visit. Each will be convicted and sentenced to one month on each charge, the terms to be served concurrently." said Mr J. Miller, S.M., at the Hastings court this morning when sentencing two young married women—Doreen Veronica Kane, of Auckland, and Rita May Swann, of Wellington—on three charges of shopFor the accused, counsel pointed out that both were young married women. Kane's husband was away on one oi New Zealand's warships, and she naa come to Napier to visit an aged mother. Her sister, Swann. too. had come from Wellington on a similar visit. Her husband had left her. and she experienced the greatest difficulty in securing anything from him to support her. There was also a boy of six vears, suffering from a serious complaint in hospital. She was the sole support of this child.
