SANATORIUM EXTENSIONS
TO THE EDITOH Sir—The latest addition to the Pleasant Valley Sanatorium that is recommended is a sun-balcony for the women similar to that provided for the men. This may be very fine, but if the restrictions are the same, this balcony also may fall into disuse Mav I suggest that steps be taken to have the rats removed, or, perhaps better, that the dining room receive attention? After all is said and done, rat-dirt about the main building and sediment in the milk are not in the best interests of public health, nor is a draughty dining room the best place in which' patients with temperatures have their meals during cold weather -I am. etc.. Celsus.
[An inquiry which we have made has provided the information that, while rats were present during the summer and autumn, vigorous remedial measures resulted in their complete eradication, so much so that there has been no evidence of the presence of these rodents or their excreta for the past two. or three months. During the same period the/quality of the milk supply has been above reproach, the presence of any sediment being scarcely sufficient to offend even the most fastidious palate. The airiness of the dining, room is onlv such as is. consistent with the generally-accepted open-air principles of the treatment of tuberculosis Patients with temperatures do not receive their meals in the dining room except those wh-'se temperatures have been proved, after careful observation In bed to belong to that exceptional variety .described as " ignorable."—EdO.D.T.]
