NOTES ON THE RUNNING PADISHAH'S POPULAR WIN (Fhom Our Special Reporter) CHRISTCHURCH. Aug. 8. . The Grant National meeting was opened in cold and dull weather, making it rather difficult to distinguish the runners. This was particularly the case in connection with the last race, which was run about 20 minutes late and in a bad light. At this time of the year a strict adherence to time should be imperative. There was a particularly large attendance; in fact, one of the very best—if not the best—ever seen at a Grand National meeting. The Grand National Steeplechase proved to be the good thing generally anticipated, and the only doubt was the question of an amateur horseman being on top. In the race Padishah was very well handled, and the only semblance of a mistake was when Slayer was allowed a short length lead at the take off at Cutts's for the second time. Padishah measured the biggest jump on the course in brilliant style, and when he jumped away from Slayer at the Kennels double the race was practically over. Erination ran on well in attempting to give weight to a superior horse, and Slayer, after being apparently beaten half a mile from home, stayed on well to finish a good third. The win was very popular, and Padishah is now expected to make a bold bid in the Grand National Hurdles. The Winter Cup does not really admit of description, as inside the final furlong Catalogue strode to the front, and won easing up in the last 50 yards. Majority, the favourite, was one of the last to get going and that proved to be the end of his chance. Trial Hurdles Peter Beckford dropped out of the Trial Hurdles, for which Dividend started favourite. Jewish Lad, Colonel French, and Last Link were the early leaders. Colonel French dropped back at the mile post, where Dividend, Jewish Lad. Last Link, and Araboa were handy. Rounding the top, and on to the home turn Last Link moved up and.Araboa joined the leaders at the last hurdle. Araboa was first to land and, ridden out, stalled off Chat and won by a length. Dividend was four lengths away, with Esperance Bay, Jewish Lad, and McHeath next. Last Link stopped 4n the run from the last hurdle Araboa was having his third race over hurdles. He fell at Trentham, was unplaced at the Christchurch Hunt meeting and then scored a win. Paparua Handicap A full field faced the barrier for the Paparua Handicap. Strip and Grey Honour were most in demand. Grey Honour, Skyrena, and Counterblast, on the extreme outside, began well. Grey Honour, Konneta, Mittie, Paper Note, Skyrena, and Counterblast were the leaders as they straightened for home. When well into the straight Strip, Straightdell and Valantua were with the leaders, and Master Hotspur showed up on the rails, but then dropped back. Skyrena went on from Grev Honour and then Paper Note came on to beat the former and won bv a length. Tooley Street finished a neck away third, half a length in front of Grey Honour. Then came Lady Leiph. Mittie. Counterblast, and Gay Chou. The winner began from 3, Skyrena 7, Tooley Street 18, Gay Honour 4, Mittie 16, Lady Leigh G, Counterblast 20, and Gay Chou 12, and of the others, Valantua and Strip drew 14 and 15 Jumpers' Flat Handicap The Jumpers' Flat was an excellent betting race. When they turned into the back, King Rey going strongly, led Round Score, Agog, and Pink Robe. King Rey led Round Score and Pink Robe as they came round the top. where Recollection, The) Surgeon, and Jewelled Girdle were the leading division. King Rey led Pink Robe, Recollection, Round Score, Jewelled Girdle, and Charade into the straight.

Lustral moved up to the leaders at the distance. King Rey was itill in charge 100 yards fron home, and then Charade came with a strong run and beat him by a length. Recollection was three lengths away third, and then came Pink Robe, Jewelled Girdle, Mount Val, and Tutor. Mount Val, Charade, and Silk Sox were the last to leave the straight. Ellanui fell and broke a leg when racing near the far turn, and had to be destroyed. Cashmere Plate In the Cashmere Plate, Nigger Boy, Lord Midas, School Girl, Not Out, Swingtime, and Muriet were first to show out, and when in the straight Indian Son and St. Cloud came into view. Nigger Boy continued in charge from the distance, and Lord Midas, staying on much better than usual, put in a final claim. Nigger Boy kept on to beat Lord Midas by a length. Indian Sun was two lengths away, getting up to beat Not Out for a place. Muriet was fourth, with Little Robin and Kaiwaka next. Nigger Boy drew 16, Not Out 4, Lord Midas 14, Indian Sun 19. Grand National Steeples Survoy and Silver Sight were missing when the Grand National Steeplechase field came into the birdcage. Padishah was made an odds-on chance for a win and place, but paid nearly twice as much for the place. After crossing the first fence and stand double Cottingham and Gold Wren drew right away from Slayer and Tom Cat. Racing to the kennels double the field were all shaping well at the fences. Cottingham jumped away from Gold Wren at the double, but after crossing the sod wall broke down and was pulled up when six lengths in front of Gold Wren and 20 lengths in front of Slayer. Tom Cat had dropped right back. Gold Wren was a tired horse at the stand double, and fell at the second leg. Slayer then was in charge, but was joined by Padishah when going into Cutts's fence just in front of Erination and Manawatu. At the sod wall the quartet was in close order, and then Padishah and Slayer drew out a bit. Padishah outjumped Slayer at the kennels double, and then Erination moved into second place. Padishah led Erination over the final fence and then came on to beat him by five lengths. Slayer was a length away. Then came Manawatu, another 10. lengths away, and Tomcat finished the course a long way back. The win was a most popular one, and Padishah and his amateur pilot were greeted with salvos of applause as they came back to the birdcage. The applause was renewed at. the presentation of the plate which went with the stakes. Enfield Steeples The Enfield Steeples proted to be a chapter of accidents. Uncle Jim dropped his rider at. the first of the stand double and Cuhferden crumpled up at Cutts's fence. Hanover carried El Caballo along and the latter hooked the second of the Kennels double. Hanover continued to show the way to El Caballo, who fell at the second last fence, where Red Terror fell and Glenvane ran off. Hanover came on to win. Glenvane was taken back and finished second. Culverden also completed the course, but came back a oroken down horse. The Winter Cup The early leaders at the rise of the barrier in the Winter Cup were Nightdress. Mishna, Haughtv Winner, Nightcalm, Alma and Catalogue, and they were the leading lot roundirtg the far turn, and then Spanish Lad showed up. Trench Fight had taken charge and led Night Dress. Mishna, Nightcalm, Catalogue and Spanish Lad. Majority got badly away, but was making up ground. Trench Fight led into the straight from Night Dress, Mishna, Nightcalm, Haughty Winner, Alma and Spanish Lad, but once inside the distance Catalogue strode to the front, and won, easing up, by twp lengths from Dictate, who came with a late run and beat Lady Montana by two lengths. Spanish Lad was close up fourth, with Trench Fight, Haughty Winner, Alma and Majority next. Lady Montana and Dictate were not near the leaders at the home turn. Nothing could have beaten Catalogue bar Majority with a better run. Avonhead Handicap The final event on the card was run in a bad light. Gemara and Grey Night could be seen out in front, and the latter led into the straight. Inside the distance a bunch was spread across the track, and in a close finish Raana won from Lady Tinkle, with Montessa close up, and then Shanghai Lily, Screamer, Le Toquet and Flame Queen. Astaire was handy to the leaders a furlong from home, but faded, and Phenomenal was well up at the home turn. An Inquiry After the Paparua Handicap an inquiry was held into Strip's running, and the explanation tendered was accepted. HANDICAPS FOR TO-MORROW (Pan United Press Association; CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 8. Following are the handicaps for the third day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting:— HUNT CUP STEEPLECHASE, Of £3OO. About two miles and a-half.

Consistent Place-getter An unlucky Grand National contestant was Pipi, who finished second to Haydn. Awahuri. and Slow Tom. and third in Inniskillen's year. A Substantial Profit The Auckland Racing Club's balance sheet shows a profit of £15,723 for the season. Aged. Winners No horse under seven years has ever won the Grand National Hurdles, but there have been 12 of this age who have succeeded. At the other end ox the scale two 12-year-olds. Sir Solo and Gladful. have been successful The Slowest Time The slowest winner of a Grand National is Freeman, who took Bmin 39£sec in 1891, the year in which the distance was reduced to three miles. The record for the race is held by Peter Maxwell at 6min 54 3-ssec. The Oldest Runner The oldest horse to start in a Grand National in recent years was Irish Comet, who was 15 when he contested the event last August. He was not raced until he was 10, and was 13 when he notched his first win. Bridegroom Bridegroom has won three races over country in three starts, two at Ellershe and one at Wellington. The style in which he has been jumping the Riccarton fences further emphasises the opinion that he is one of the finds of the iumping season. He is engaged in the Hunt Cup to-morrow. Found Everywhere There are people who have an idea that their appearance warrants free admission to a race meeting, as well as a free luncheon ticket. However, no city has a monopoly of that class of individual, and a London paper says that a North of England secretary, possessed of a sense of humour, put a signboard outside his office bearing the word "Gimmies." and an intimation that they would be dealt with up to a certain time. Asked what it meant, he replied:—" That's the word I hear most for two hours before racing—' Gi'me a gentleman's badge.' 'Gi'me a couple of ladies' badges.' 'Gi'me a luncheon ticket.' 'Gi'me a tea ticket.' 'Gi'me a race card.' and so on." He took the notice down before racing commenced, but it did.make a few of the unblushing graspers think! Bad Losers Disappointed backers make a fuss everywhere. The prominent French owner Mr M. Boussac never makes a bet in that country, but recently came in for a very hostile demonstration at St. Cloud. He started two horses in a field of five, and, coupled on the totalisator. they started at 10 to 1 on. They ran third and fourth, and. notwithstanding it was generally known he is a non-better, those who supported his horses loudly denounced him. The chances are that the same people cheered just as loudlv when his colt, Pharis. who was well in the betting for each race, subsequently won the French Derby and Grand Prix de Paris. Australian racegoers are credited with being bad losers, but it seems the same everywhere. Time Record for Steeples The time record for the Grand National Steeplechase is held by Peter Maxwell 9.0, who put up 6min 53 3-ssec in 1926. Oakleigh won the first time of his dual success with 10.7 in 6min 55 ?.-ssec, and Snowfall 9.3 won in 6min 58 l-ssec. When the going is firm the records show that a winner has to be able to go seven minutes or better to score. Beau Cavalier won with 11.7 in 7min lsec, Wiltshire with 10.0 in 7min 3 4-ssec, Valpeen with 10.0 in 7min ssec, and with 11.13 in 7min 4sec, Thurina with 9.10 in 7min 2 1 : 5 sec, and Nocturnus with 9.12 in 7min 5 l-ssec. Weight-carrying Records Since 1879 12 horses have won the Grand National Steeplechase with 12 stone or more. In that year Agent won with 12.0, and the following year with 12.7. Agent won again in 1884 with 12.6. In 1881 Clarence won with 12.2, and the weight-carrying record was put up in 1886, when Canard won with 12.10. In 1888 Mangahoe won under 12.7, and in 1894 Norton was first past the post with 12.8. In 1895 Mutiny won with 11.5 and the following year with 12.4. Levanter won with 12.8 in 1897 and Coalition carried 12.7 when he won for the second time in 1921. Oakleigh won with 10.7 in 1922, and under 12.0 in 1923. Since the last-mentioned year Billy Boy 11.13 and Valpeen 11.13 rank as the heaviest burdens carried to victory. TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel FIXTURES August 9, 11.—N.Z. Metropolitan T.C. For one of his diminutive stature he puts in long strides, and a win for him during the , week would be highly popular. Night Trotting in Perth "The export of a number of horses to Australia still continues, and.some good performers have been shipped, mostly to Perth," said Mr H. F. Nicoll

in his address at the Trotting Conference. "Under night trotting the West is progressing, and there is a good market for promising horses in that and other States. It is also interesting to note that breeders continue to import high-class horses from America. During the last two or three seasons several new staliions have been placed at the disposal of breeders, and from reports received the progeny of such horses promise to make good." An Appreciation " We again desire to thank the press for publicity and for the great assistance the correspondents afford trotting by their articles," said Mr Nicoll at the conference. "We accept criticisms cheerfully, knowing that, when made, they are intended to assist, and not to damn. Commendations are even more cheerfully accepted, believing that they are deserved, and encouraging us, as they do, to make further efforts towards that state of perfection to which we aspire."
