PRESBYTERY OF CENTRAL OTAGO

The Presbytery of Central Otagb met at St. Enoch's Church,? Alexandra, on Thursday, when the moderator (the*' Rev. A. L. Cardno) f presided over a good attendance of members, and welcomed the Rev. A. W. SmaUL of'lda Valley,, on taking his iseat, for the first time;.; .■ ."""". ' ..';■■•--•'• ■ '■"'■ %'; ■'■■■. The Youth Committee reported- on, several matters which had called fc-r the ;.- .atetntion' ;of the- committee i since the last Presbytery meeting. The King's Birthday Youth' Workers' Institute ;at .Ophir had been" attended by ministers and youth workers from Queenstown, Alexandra, Lauder, and Waipiata,; and valuable work had been done under - - the direction of those responsible for the various sectional groups.' The youth office Was specially- -,to- be thanked for releasing Sister Iris Wilson for the institute, and also for an itinerary of the various charges immediately ' after the institute for instructional work among Sunday school teachers and Bible class leaders. ; v. _ Following on the resolution of the Presbytery at its last meeting, negotiations had been carried on with; the executive councils and Otago District Committees of the Young MeriV and Young Women's Bible class movements, and permission had been granted for the organising of the area into a separate Central Otago District Committee. A committee of eight had been set up, and was anxious to com*mence visitation, and the other activities of the Bible class movements," all of which could be expected to have a beneficial reaction on- the control of the church's youth work in Central Otago. A donation of £5 from the executive of the young women's, mover ment. for preliminary expenses ' was gratefully received. . ~ The Rev. A. L. Cardno, reporting on the Centennial Celebrations Commit-, tee, advised that his committee thought it best that ministers,should combine with their local civic authorities where invited, leaving over any. proposals .of concerted presbytery action in IS4O. : The editor of the Outlook asked .for*- • the financial assistance of the pres* bytery in providing the church's paper free for hospitals and kindred institutions, some hundreds of copies of which, were asked for weekly. ; , The,... presbytery, decided to- take* nn- action; ' but those present who V in their 'districts.' offered -to .see? personally that one copy was" provided free to each institution= '»<'*" * ' In response tb a communication from ; the Theological Committee asking for < a small; sum from the presbytery ton wards the expenses of settling, Pastor ■ Rehbein, a refugee Christian.minister- 7 from' Germany, in New Zealand,} menir themselves' as 'being "in -J agreement, and it WJ|s : decided to asfe u for. retiring in the .various'-:.:-. congregations.:.. , ,"; , ■ • ■ • •'',■*-** Findings were read on the. iriennf&L' visitations, to the Lauder and^Atex'-- 'M andra-Clyde ■■'. charges, . showWig'":, * there had been steady progress ih all:."
