Mr J. A. Roy, M.P. for Clutha. was a passenger by the through express yesterday for Wellington.
Mr B. Ryan, secretary of the Wellington Boxing Association, returned north yesterday morning. Miss June Pickering has been appointed an assistant in the town clerk's office at Port Chalmers. There were 13 applicants for the position. Mr N. T. Lambourne, Director of Education, arrived yesterday to attend the fiftieth jubilee celebrations of the King Edward Technical College, which were commenced last night. Sympathetic reference to the illness of the Prime Minister (Mr M. J. Savage) was expressed at the meeting of the South Otago Hospital Eoard yesterday, and it was decided to write expressing best wishes for his speedy recovery. Mr G. B. Beath, lecturer in science in the Dunedin Training College, will leave for England on August 18. This year he was awarded a Carnegie Fellowship in Education by the University of New Zealand and will study educational movements overseas during the tenure of the Fellowship. His headquarters for the year will be the Institute of Education. University of London. A meeting of the congregation of the Balclutha Presbyterian Church which was held on Monday night, confirmed the call to the Rev. O. T. Baragwanath, of Auckland, and formerly of Dunedin, who has just returned from acting as assistant minister at St. Giles's Cathedral, Edinburgh. Mr H. A. Bland, who has been appointed secretary of the New South Wales Government office in London, to succeed Mr A. K. Weir, is a through passenger by the Aorangi from Sydney. He is accompanied by Mrs Bland, and he expects to be stationed in London for about five years. The Mayor (Mr A. H. Allen). Mr W. Begg, chairman of the Otago Harbour Board, and Mr H. L. Gibson will leave this morning for Christchurch to attend the quarterly meeting of the South Islands Travel Association. At the monthly meeting of the executive of the Automobile Association (Otago) last night, the president (Mr P. W. Breen) referred to the recent death of Mr A. J. Allen, who had been a member of the executive for a number of years. On Mr Breen's motion, a resolution of sympathy with the relatives was carried in the customary manner.
Northbound passengers by Union Airways yesterday morning were Messrs J. O'Brien, M. O'Brien. E. McSherry. D. J. McPhun, L. C. Hazlett, J. F. Henderson, and Mrs N. Speight and Mrs A. Speight for Christchurch, Mr E. F. Lee for Wellington. Southbound passengers by the afternoon plane were Mr J. Gascoigne from New Plymouth, Messrs L. Brooks, G. Pettit and Mrs O, J. Evans from Wellington, and Messrs J. J. Boyd and RG. Button from Christchurch.
