PARLIAMENT

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES THE BUDGET DEBATE (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Aug. 8. The House of Representatives today continued the discussion of the Budget, two Ministers, Mr F. Jones and Mr H. T. Armstrong, being included among the speakers. The total speakers now have been eight for the Government, nine for the Opposition, and both Independents in the House. The big number of Opposition speakers indicates that the Government is not anxious to prolong the debate, and it is generally expected that it will be finished by' the end of this week or early next week. Mr Jones spoke mainly on the Government's defence plans, quoting at length from the report of General Mackesy. and Mr Armstrong pave details of the loans from the State Advances Department. Mr C. A. Wilkinson (Ind., EgmonO and Sir Alfred Ransom (Opposition, Pahiatua) criticised the Government's policy of spending, and Mr W. J. Poison (Opposition. Stratford) accused the Government of indifference toward the fate of the farmers.' Mr C. L. Carr (Govt.. Timaru) defended the imposition of import control. The House rose at 10.30 p.m.
