OBITUARY

MR LEONARD MERRICK LONDON, Aug. 7. The death has occurred of the novelist Mr Leonard Merrick. Mr Leonard Merrick, who was 75 years of age, was the author of " Conrad in Quest of His Youth," "When Love Flies Out o' the Window," "The Man Who Understood Women." "The Quaint Companions," and many others. In 1918 his work was reissued in a collected edition with introductions by some of the most famous writers of the day. MR THOMAS ANDREW APIA, Aug. 8. (Received Aug. 9, at 0.15 a.m.) The death has occurred of Mr Thomas Andrew, merchant, aged 83. He was a resident of Samoa for 48 years, and of other Pacific islands, including the Gilberts, for five years. He was interested in rubber and cocoa, and introduced Para rubber into Samoa. Photography was at one time his principal hobby, and he obtained an interesting collection of photos of early Samoa. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.
