NEGRO BOXER
GAMBLE TO CATCH STEAMER SUCCESSFUL TOUR OF AUSTRALIA (Feb United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Aug. 8. When he entered the Stadium ring in Sydney to secure victory over Kui Kong Young on Thursday night last the, diminutive American negro feather-weight boxer, Jackie Wilson, had already overstayed his leave after 13 fights in Australia, and the steamer Aorangi, by which he was to return to America, was then drawing out of the harbour. He had taken a gamble that he could leave next day by the Awatea for Wellington and join the Aorangi at Auckland. To-day the Awatea arrived in Wellington six hours before the Aorangi reached Aucklaud and Wilson joined her to-day. Mr Charles Lucas, the Australian promoter, who also joined the Aorangi, said that Wilson made a lot of money boxing on a percentage basis The takings at Thursday's fight were £2650. Mr Lucas hopes to return to Sydney in November, and while in the States he will endeavour to bring back Joey Archibald. Wilson will also return to contest the world title if Archibald comes to Sydney next December. Mr Lucas intends to arrange an open air bout for Wilson in New Zealand. He expressed the opinion that boxing was in the doldrums in New Zealand as those connected with the snort " won't pay any money "—the Sarron fights in 1930 gave the game all the encouragement it needed, and if the promoters wished to draw the public they must put on big fights.
