SATURDAY’S MATCHES WIN FOR UNIVERSITY Not a few followers of the Senior Hockey Competition were surprised on Saturday when University A gained a decisive victory over High School Old Boys. Albany beat University B comfortably, and Collegiate had a win over Training College. University A v. High School Old Boys University A's extn. speed in finishing off movements contributed largely to its win over High School Old Boys at Tonga Park. The score was five goals to nil, compared with a half tune score of one goal to nil. Old Boys were not able to keep up the pace, and faded out towards the end of the game. Stick work rather than team work was a feature of the first spell, but University's combination improved greatly later in the game. Alldred opened University’s score about 15 minutes after the commencement of play, though actually at this stage University was lucky to be in the lead. The slowness of Old Boys’ inside forwards lost them a goal on more than one occasion, though their play was no doubt hampered by a soft patch in the centre of the ground. Early in the second spell, with University constantly on the attack, Kerens made a good save, but immediately after B. Ryburn shot the ball into the net. A minute or two tater Alldred scored again flicking the ball over Hercus’s head. One of the most prominent University players was Yule, who was very precise and definite in all his movements. He was responsible for the next score, drawing Hercus out of the goal mouth and slipping the ball along to B. Ryburn, who netted. Old Boys were making the mistake at this stage of separating halves and forwards by too wide a space. The final score was by Alldred who, by quick following up, was able to slip the ball through the defence. The game ended: University A ... 5 goals. High School Old Boys Nil. Messrs E. D. Brown and H. Sew Hoy were the umpires. Albany v. University B Playing at Tonga Park. Albany beat University B by 6 goals to 2. Mong nlayed an outstanding game for Albany. and was responsible for five of its goals. Though University had the territorial advantage of the first spell. Albany had out up two goals before University scored, the spell ending with the score 2—l. Albany took charge during the second half. Mong scoring another four goals and Raine scoring once for University. The game ended: Albany 5 goals. University B .. .. 2 goals. Mr J. Harris was umpire

Collegiate v. Training College

Collegiate and Training College met at Logan Park, and the game was very even. There was very little between them, and the fact that the Collegiate goalie was in form really saved the day for Collegiate. The ground was extremely heavy, and both teams began to tire before the finish. The final score was: Collegiate 2 goals. Training College .. 1 goal. Referees’ Examination During the afternoon Mr E. Brown was under examination, and it has been announced that he was successful in passing the A Grade New Zealand examination. Second Grade University C 14, Y.M.CA. 1. Technical 4. University E 2. Albany 4, University D 1. WOMEN’S MATCHES King’s v. Dunedin The Oval was not in good order and play in the King’s-Dunedin match suffered considerably. King’s set up a strong attack and had the Dunedin defence in trouble On occasions the latter got away ; but found the defence particularly sound. Many King’s attempts missed "on account of dropped chances and steady tackling by the Dunedin rearguard. It was hard fought, but King’s had no difficulty to win. The game ended: King’s 4 goals. Dunedin .. .. .'. 1 goal. Momona v. Brighton The Momona-Brighton match was a hard struggle in the mud and the Brighton backs gave the Purple forwards a difficult task. Time and again they repulsed well-thought-out attacks but failed to take advantage of the Momona weaknesses. The Brighton forwards again played well, but met a stiff resistance from the Momona rearguard. It was a stern -battle all the way, and the whistle sounded: Momona 7 goals. Brighton Nil. Otago v. College Oval No. 1 was not in good condition for the Otago-Training College game, many soft patches making it hard for players to keep their feet. It was an important match, as both needed the points. First one, then the other side attacked, but the forwards found both sets of backs particularly sound. There was much clever play, and College, whose combination was expected to turn the tide in their favour, found Otago hard to beat. There were opportunities missed on both sides, and Otago, who relied more on individual effort, had difficulty in scoring against good College tackling. It was a bright, even game all through, and time was called with the score: Otago 2 S°als. College .. - - - - • • 2 goalsB Grade West Harbour 3, Kings 2. Training College 3. Momona nil. Bounty 13, Seacliff 2. C Grade Carlton 9. Otago nil. , Training College 5, Taien 3.
