A SUGGESTION An English sports writer recently described badminton Singles as too strenuous for women players. If their Singles were played within the short service lines, this branch of the game would become far more suitable for women for a four-foot reduction in the length of the, court would make an appreciable difference in the play. In golf and cricket a similar allowance is made for the physically weaker sex, and such an allowance makes no difference to the amount of skill required. Although practice on a smaller court might be a slight handicap to the few New Zealand women who play in other countries (writes “ Dropshot," in the Hawke’s Bay Herald Tribune), the use of such courts would mean a more enjoyable game for the great majority of club players. The latter point is of immeasurably greater importance. SOLID TRAINING Members of New Zealand’s badminton team, which will sail for Australia by the Awatea to-morrow, have been practising solidly for their three weeks’ tour of the Commonwealth. The three Wellington members of the team —E. A. Roussell, G. A. Pearce and Miss N. Fleming—-have been working hard at their form (says the Sports Post), and Roussell and Miss Fleming, who will pair in the Mixed Doubles, have teamed together m frequent work-outs. P, E. Hawksworth and Mrs Hawksworth. in Masterton, have not been wasting time either. And.on Wednesday of last week Miss Mavis Kerr, second string of the women’s team, arrived in Wellington from Dunedin, en route to Masterton. to practise with them. .' . . Miss Kerr has not had a great, deal of practice so far this season, interclub matches in Dunedin having been few. She was most anxious to obtain as much practice ,as possible, and she planned to return to Wellington on Monday with the Hawks worths for four or five days’ solid play before the boat sails. ' ~ The team will assemble to-morrow and a farewell luncheon will be given them that day by the New Zealand Federation. . ._ , The team will arrive in Sydney:on Ju'v 24 and depart the same oay for Melbourne, arriving next day. After a day’s rest the tour will begin in enmosf * . For the next 18 or 19 days the players will be travelling and playing a good deal. „ , Melbourne, Hobart. Launceston Adelaide, country districts in Victoria, and Melbourne again will be visited by the team before the return to Sydney Then a match will be plaved in Sydney and another in Newcastle before the team returns to New Zealand. A fairly large party is travelling with the team. JOTTINGS In a provincial ladder challenge match. Fergusson beat Swan and now occupies third place on the ladder with Swallow and Abbott still to beat. Misses M. Kerr. K. Angell and O. Erridge occupy first, second and third positions respectively on the women's ladder. The Otago Championships have been set down for September 4-9, the original dates. August 21-26. clashing with the New Zealand Championships at New Plymouth, in which two or three local players intend to compete. Mr G. Lemin has been appointed captain and manager of the Otago team to play in Invercargill on July 29. Whitcombes 'or Badminton. 9
