Mr M. Silverstone left for Wellington by the through express yesterday. Mr James Begg was a passenger for Wellington by the through express yesterday. Mr J. T. Paul left by the through express for the north yesterday on a visit to Sydney.
Mr Peter Mackenzie was a passenger by the mid-day express yesterday for Wellington to attend a meeting of the Sheepowners’ Federation.
At yesterday’s meeting of the Otago Education Board, Mr W. D. Sutherland was appointed the board’s representative on the committee of the Vocational Guidance Association. Mr J. Brennan, who has been on the local staff of the Registrar-general’s Department for the past 13 years, and who has been transferred to Wellington, went north by the through express yesterday. Colonel E. Puttick, D. 5.0., has been appointed as aide-de-camp (additional) to the King. Colonel Puttick is the officer commanding the central military district and is the senior colonel of the New Zealand military forces, Mr L. M. Uttley, of Invercargill, has received notice of his transfer to Wellington. Mr Uttley is employed by the Public Works Department and nas been transferred to the department’s head office at Wellington. He will leave Invercargill to take up his new position on August 1. Mr Uttley has represented Southland at football and cricket.
After a connection of over half a century with shipping Captain A. Smith superintendent stevedore at Auckland for the New Zealand Shipping Company, retired on Tuesday. Captain Smith, who is a native of Turriff, Aberdeenshire, is a son of a sea captain, and has had nearly 40 years’ service with the New Zealand Shipping Company. Northbound passengers by Union Airways yesterday morning were Mr J. A. Bond for Christchurch, Miss R. Holloway and Mr J. Donovan for Wellington, Mr G. Ashcroft for Palmerston North, Dr W. Sutherland, Mr W. Armstrong and Mrs J. McKaln for Auckland. Southbound passengers by the afternoon plane were Mr R. W. Martin from Blenheim. Mr and Mrs J. S. Hunt and Mr R. D. Thomson from Christchurch.
Dr J. W. Mcllraith, chief inspector of primary schools, will retire from the educational service at the end of the month, having reached superannuation age. He is a graduate of Canterbury University College, and began his career as assistant to the professors of law and economics in that college. He has written on economics and other subjects, and, in addition to his other educational activities, including a period as senior inspector of schools in Auckland, he has been engaged in adult educational work. He will live in retirement in Auckland.
