MEETING OF SOCIETY The monthly meeting of the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelly to Animals was held vcsterday afternoon. There were nresent:—Messrs Crosby Morris (in the chair). E. C Reynolds. J. C. Willis. D. C. Cameron R. Fountain, J. R. Dickson. G. Malheson. and S. P. Leith. Correspondence Mrs M. B, Berkeley (Karitane) wrote asking if the society could do anything for the stray cats at Karitane.—Mr Reynolds, in answer to a question, stated that the cats would be well able to take care of themse.ves by preying on bird life,—lt was decided to take no action in the matter as it hardly came under the heading of one of the society’s responsibilities The New Zealand Federation wrote stating that there had been a very poor response to its appeal for contributions to a general fighting fund, and that the matter would be discussed at the next conference.—Received. , . . In reply to the society's complaint to the City Council that telephone calls were being received by the inspector which should be made to the City Corporation’s ranger, the council wrote stating that it did not consider the reinstallation of the ranger’s telephone justified.—Received.

General Mr Maurice Joel was added to the list of the society’s honorary solicitors. Mr M. C. Henderson was appointed a member of the committee. It was decided to write to Mr Earl Henderson, commending him for his action in rescuing a number of puppies that had been thrown in a sack into the Leith. Inspector’s Report The inspector (Mr J. J. Hinchcliff) reported having visited the following places during the month:—Owaka, Balclutha, Tapanui, Heriot, Edievalc, Rae’s Junction, Waikouaiti. Clinton, Palmerston, and Mosgiel, the stock sales at Burnside, Palmerston, Owaka. Clinton, and Balclutha, and a clearing sale at Waikouaiti, The following complaints were attended to:— _ , Cruelty to Dog and Pups (City).— The complaint stated that these animals were kept in dirty conditions. They were in a run 9ft by 2Jft, along the front of which was netting wire The end of the run where they slept was boxed in. Both the collie and her pups were in splendid cpndition, and no cruelty was being inflicted. Cruelty to Parrot—The complaint stated that this bird was left outside in all weather conditions. The parrot was found on a porch with a shelter overhead. It was tethered with a light chain. Its removal to better quarters was immediately attended to. Starving Stock.—Twenty head of young cattle (all in good condition) and a few sheep were found. There was no sign of starvation. Cruelly to Dog and Pups.—A grey-

hound was found in a kennel which was dry inside. The surroundings, however, were a quagmire, The pups (about five months old) were in a small enclosed run with sleeping accommodation at one end. The run was very dirty and the sleeping quarters too s nail. The owner was ordered to make better housing for the animals, or. better still, to get rid of them. Cruelty to Dog.—The complaint was that this dog barked and howled at night, and was not properly cared for. The dog had the appearance of being exceptionally well cared for. It had a good kennel, plenty of dry straw, and was in the pink of condition.
