CONDUCT AT GENEVA

MR JORDAN DEFENDED RESPONSIBLE FOR ANGLORUSSIAN TALKS (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 12. A defence of the conduct at Geneva of Mr W. J. Jordan, New Zealand High Commissioner in London, was made by Mr E. L. Cullen (Govt., Hawke’s Bay) during the Address-in-Reply debate in the House of Representatives to-day. His remarks were a reply to comment by Mr F. W. Doidge (Opposition, Tauranga), who had appealed to the Prime Minister (Mr Savage) to keep Mr Jordan away from Geneva. “Mr Jordan has given yeoman service to this country and to the world when sitting in the League of Nations,” Mr Cullen said. “ He has been the cause of bringing Russia to assist Great Britain when Great Britain to-day is only too keen to have her at her side in a peace pact." On many occasions the Opposition had twitted the Labour Party about Russia and members of the Labour Party had said that they believed that Russia would win through, Mr Cullen added. Russia had now won through far enough for Great Britain to crave her assistance in a peace pact. Mr Jordan had given a great deal of assistance, Mr Cullen said-even if he had given Mr Anthony Eden some moments of anxiety. The world to-day would have been m the throes of war had Mr Eden had his way.
