THEFT FROM AWATEA

LIFT AND DOOR KEYS OFFENCE BY SHIP’S CADET (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 12. The excuse given by Joseph Spencer, aged 18. ship’s cadet, why he had stolen an electric lift control key and a brass door key from the Awatea was that he wanted them as souvenirs, said Detective Sergeant Doyle, prosecuting in the Police Court to-day. Had the articles not been recovered, he said, considerable inconvenience would have been entailed to the ship’s company. When located, the accused had the articles in his possession. He was discharged from the ship yesterday for drunkenness.

The magistrate (Mr J. L. Stout, S.M.) admitted the accused to probation for 12 months.
