JUNIOR CHAMBER

THE YEAR’S ACTIVITIES ANNUAL REPORT OF EXECUTIVE The annual report of the Dunedin Junior Chamber of Commerce states that during the year 26 meetings of the executive were held. These had been well attended, and the work had nroceeded with enthusiasm and accord. At the beginning of the financial year the number on the roll was 78. and this figure had increased to 110. At its peak the membership was 115, but subsequent resignations, due to transfers and other reasons, had decreased the total to the present figure. A syllabus of 11 meetings covering the year was compiled, and these functions proved most interesting and instructive. The Junior Chamber had the pleasure of entertaining the Young Farmers’ Conference to dinner, and had as guests some 120 young farmers and officials of the Farmers’ Union. The function was particularly successful, and would, it was hoped, be the forerunner of an annual fixture. During the year a party paid a visit to the Palmerston Young Farmers’ Club, and a return visit from the club was later received.

Close contact with the executive and council of the Chamber of Commerce was maintained during the year, and on two occasions the members of the executive were the guests of the senior executive to tea. following which the evening was devoted to discussion of subjects of mutual interest. Mr J. S. Skinner was again the senior chamber’s representative on the junior executive The sub-committee had been functioning with varying degrees of enthusiasm. Different subjects had been discussed, but of most importance were national affairs and civic amenities. The Debating and Public Speaking Committee had been very active and during the year debates were held with the Hawea Flat Young Farmers’ Club, the Palmerston Young Farmers’ Club and a team from the Presbyterian Young Men’s Bible Classes. In addition to these four internal debates were held, and many members had added to their experience of public speaking. A recent innovation had been the forming of a public speaking class, in which some 35 members had enrolled.

The year closed with a credit balance of £3 13s sd. after transferring £6 to reserve. At balance date the sum of £l2 11s Id was held in current account. and £8 10s lOd stood to credit in the Dunedin Cavings Bank. It was felt, however, that finance should be discussed by the incoming executive and that suitable provision should be made to cover the increased expenditure.
