THE Otago Daily Times. “Inveniam viam aut faciam.” [Established November 15,1861.] DUNEDIN, MONDAY, JULY 13, 1868.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

The annual ploughing match of the Dunedin Agricultural Association, including Saddle Hill, Green Island, Anderson’s Bay,< Waikari, and NorthEast Valley, will be held in Mr F. Jones's paddock, on Wednesday. For the purpose of creating a market for native flax, when dressed, the Provincial Council is prepared to grant a bonus of L 250 to any individual or company establishing a rope factory in a central place, capable of turning out, at,least, one ton of rope daily, The “Police Gazette ” shows that during,. Jiih.e, there were in Otago, 68 apprehensions by the police, for various offences which/ are specified; and “ 90 others for drunkenness and minor other offences.” Of the 68 persons taken into custody, six were charged with lunacy; several of the charges were of committing assaults, and "disorderly conduct” and "habitual drunkenness” are included in the list.

A commencment of the works connected with the construction of a Graving Dock, Port Chalmers, is, we believe, about to be made by Mr T. Connor, the contractor. But the commencement will certainly not be “ the driving of the first pile of the coffer-dam,” as was stated in the Port news as published on Saturday. Twelve or probably 18 months hence will be time enough to talk about the coffer-dam.

The second session of the County Council of Westland has terminated (says the "West Coast Times” of the 4th Inst). The Council stands at present prorogued to the first day of October next. The session has been in many respects more unsatisfactory than the one which preceded it The Council has shown less earnestness in asserting its privileges, and has dealt with the various questions that have been brought before it far more perfunctorily. It has, further than this, allowed excited passions and local jealousies to display themselves to an extent unknown during the session presided over by the Hon. John Hall Now that the session is closed it is openly avowed by many of the country members that at the next meeting of the County Council there shall be a powerful combination organised against Hokitika and its two representatives. . With the combination against it now threatened, we very much fear that Hokitika will stand but a poor chance Of justice being done to it, when the County Council has another opportunity of effecting mischief.
