OLD RIFLES IN LOFT

Thirty Enfield rifles of 1885 manufacture were discovered in a loft, by workmen engaged in the extension of the wool store of Messrs Williams and Kettle, Ltd., at Port Ahuriri, Napier. They are believed to have belonged to the volunteer rifle company, probably some time after the South African War, who used the wool store as a drill shed. That the rifles were intended for drill purposes only is indicated by the fact that the barrels are partially sawn through, making it impossible to fire them. A number of rotted and moth-eaten uniforms were also discovered.
