COUNCIL BY-ELECTION
SUCCESS OF ANTI-LABOUR CANDIDATE POLL AT UPPER HUTT (Per United Press Association; WELLINGTON. July 12. A noil of more than 60 per cent, of the electors of the East Ward of the Upper Hutt Borough Council elected Mr J Purvis their representative on th« council at a by-election to-da”. The vacancy occurred through the r.ection of Cr J. Blewman to the Mayoralty following the death of the -yiayor (Mr Peter Robertson). The voting was. J Purvis (Anti-Labour), 6/b. O. J ; Plummer (Labour). 607; informal. 2. total. 1285: majority for Purvis. 69. In an interview to-night, Mr Purvis stressed that„ he an •'anti-Labour” candidate. The Uppei Hutt Borough Council will now have three Labour members and a Labour Mayor and five members classing themselves as Independents or supporters of political interests other than Labour.
