NGAHAURANGA GORGE

NEW WELLINGTON HIGHWAY VALUABLE PART IN DEFENCE (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 11. The claim that when the new Ngahauranga Gorge highway was completed Wellington could be evacuated in less than a day in the event of an invasion was made by the Minister of Public Works (Mr Semple) in the course of an address to the men engaged on the construction of the road.

He said the highway would form a very valuable part in New Zealand’s defence, though no one wanted to see it used that way. Mr Semple said that within six weeks all the earth moving would have been done and the big job would require only finishing off.
