DUNEDIN Y.W.C.A.

ACTIVITIES DEMONSTRATED “OPEN NIGHT” FOR VISITORS Members and friends of the Dunedin Young Women’s Christian Association were afforded an excellent opportunity of gauging the extent and variety of the activities of the large number of girls who are either residents of tha hostel or members of the numerous sports and other clubs associated with the organisation, when the association's clubrooms and hostel were open for inspection last night. - The normal activities of the organisation, which were grouped together for the evening to give the visitors a comprehensive idea of the variety of interests for which the association caters, indicated in striking fashion the valuable part which the Y.W.C.A. plays in the community by providing facilities for educational and recreational training for girls, and although the “ open night ” was organised at comparatively short notice, many visitors availed themselves of the opportunity of seeing for themselves how the association’s activities are conducted On the ground floor of the duo building, the lounge and, cafeteria were occupied by girls doing handwork of various types, and in the main hall, basketball, badminton, and “keep fit" demonstrations were given by the club members. In the rooms on the upper floor, classes in home nursing and first aid were conducted, these classes having a comprehensive programme which includes lectures from time to time by medical men. There were also other clubrooms devoted to a variety of occupations, including fretworking, considerable skill being displayed by the girls in the manufacture of fretwork and jig-saw puzzles. In the hostel examples of needlework and knitting, done by the residents in their snare time, formed an interesting exhibit. visitors also being shown the comfortable, airy bedrooms, and the cosy common-rooms of the hostel which at present houses no fewer than 53 permanent boarders and six casuals.
