NEGLIGENT DRIVING

DEATH OF PEDESTRIAN ACCUSED SENT TO GAOL (Per United Press Association) BLENHEIM, July . 11. The only criminal case before the Supreme Court sessions, which were opened to-day, comprised charges against Charles Gordon Gladstone Prior, a tractor driver, of Recklessly driving a motor car thereby causing the death of Eric Price Newburgh, or alternatively of negligently driving thereby causing death. A true bill on the alternative charge was returned by the grand jury, and the accused pleaded guilty. Mr Justice Northcroft. despite a plea for leniency, imposed a sentence of two months’ imprisonment, with bar labour, and cancelled the accused’s driving licence for three years. His Honor said he was satisfied that the accused had been .speeding, and it was his duty to implement the warnings against speeding so often given by the courts.
