Mr Arthur Ibbotson has returned to Dunedin from a visit to Australia. Mr E. Macdonald has been re-elected chairman of the Waipiata Sanatorium Committee.

Mr A. C. Hanlon, K.C., returned to Dunedin from the north by the through express yesterday afternoon. Messrs Charles Owen and W. Mackay left on a visit to Sydney by the through express from the north yesterday.

Mr Arthur S. Cayzer, manager of Messrs R. S. McKenzie, Ltd., returned by the Awatea from Sydney, arriving in Dunedin by the through express yesterday.

Messrs W. J. Stevenson, R. Gourley, and J. Kcllas have been granted their “A” pilot licences, having passed an examination recently conducted by Flight-lieutenant R. Hudson,

Messrs W. Clarke and D. W. Stalker (Invercargill) left for Wellington by the through express yesterday to attend a meeting of the executive of the Federation of Labour.

Mr W. T. Wilson left by the through express for .the north yesterday on a visit to Great Britain, via Sydney. He will be absent from Dunedin for about 12 months.

Mr A. E. Russell (Balclutha) was a passenger by the through express yesterday for Wellington to attend a meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Power Boards’ Association. Mr G. Gould, of Christchurch, chairman of directors of the New Zealand Shipping Company. Ltd., returned to Wellington by the Awatea on Monday from a visit to Australia. A cable message from London states that the Paymaster Director-general of the Navy.- Rear-admiral Sir Arthur F. Strickland, ha s been placed or. the retired list at his own reque.st as from October 7.

Mr A. G. Hollingworth, at present house steward at the Dunedin Public Hospital, has been appointed house manager at the Christchurch Public Hospital. The position which he will fill will embrace that of the former controller of stores.

Mr E, C. Sare, who has been manager of the Hamilton branch of the Bank of New Zealand for eight years, has been promoted to the position of inspector. Mr A. A. Edwards, of Blenheim, will succeed Mr Sare. The noted English musician Dr Frederick Staton, conductor of the Sheffield Choir, England, who is to tour New Zealand as examiner for the Royal Schools of Music. London, will be the guest conductor of the Royal Wellington Choral Union’s performance of Haydn’s “ Creation ” on October 7. Messrs A. S. Falconer, T. K. S. Sidey, W. J Meade, J. J. Marlow, C. J. Wood. J. T. Gilbert. J. C. Bates, and H. McLachlan (Invercargill), J. Andrew (Hyde). A. McKinnon, sen. (Middlemarch). E. K. Sim (Pukemaori, Southland). and Mrs John Stewart (Pyramid. Southland) left by the through express yesterday for Wellington to attend a Dominion conference of delegates to the National Party. North-bound passengers by Union Airways yesterday morning were Messrs G. W. Lane and L. Johnson for Wellington and Mr G. Crawshaw for Gisborne. South-bound passengers by the afternoon plane were Mr A. McDonald from Auckland. Mr R. H Rowland from Wellington, and Mr A L. Kirk from Nelson. A Press Association cable message from Sydney states that the City Council, which controls the metropolitan electricity supply, yesterday appointed Mr Roger Vine Hall general manager at a salary of £3OOO a year to succeed the present manager. Mr Forbes Mackay, who retires in October Applicants from all parts of the Empire included two from New Zealand. Mr Vine Hall has been m the City Council’s employ for 35 years, and he will retire in four years. Mr R, J. Smith, who for the past eight years has been stock agent and auctioneer for the National Mortgage and Agency Company at Temuka, was the guest of honour at a farewell social which was attended by a large gathering of farmers and others prior to his transfer to Dunedin. The Mayor of Temuka (Mr A. W. Buz.an) presided, and among the speakers was Mr J. A eland, of Peel Forest, who presented the guest of the evening with a wellfilled wallet of notes, a travelling rug for Mrs Smith, and suitable presents for each of his two daughters and son. The gifts were suitably acknowledged by Mr Smith. Mr K. Blyth. of Geraldine, will succeed Mr Smith at Temuka.
