STOLEN CAR
TRAFFIC OFFICER'S CHASE MEN ESCAPE IN DARKNESS (Pbb United Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 10. While he was returning from Trentham on Saturday evening, a traffic officer had his attention drawn to the way in which a small car was being driven near Waikanae. The car was travelling between 15 and 20 miles an hour, and was swaying from one side of the road to the other. The officer followed the car over the Otaki bridge, the sides of which it nearly struck, and ordered the driver to stop. The driver refused, and the officer gave chase. Alongside the Otaki Station the driver of %e small car suddenly applied the brakes and skidded, nearly involving the traffic officer in a collision. The moment the car stopped the driver and passenger, both young men, alighted and with great haste made for some market gardens in tht vicinity. They crossed these and disappeared in the darkness. The traffia officer and others gave chase, but without success. It was later discovered that the. car had been unlawfully taken from Victoria street at 4.30 p.m. on Saturday. The car showed signs of having b€e» involved in a minor collision.
