SAMOAN CHIEF DEAD

MALIETOA TANUMAFILI APIA, July 9. (Received July 10, at 11.55 p.m.) , The Hon. Malietoa Tanumafili died suddenly to-day at his home, Faatora, near Apia. He was 59 years of age. In 1898 he was declared King of Samoa but resigned during the following year preceding the inauguration of the German Government in 1900. He was appointed fautua or adviser to the administrator in 1913 and held this position until his death. In 1929 he was appointed a member of the Samoah Legislative Council but resigned in 1937. He received the 0.8. E. in 1931. Interment will take place at Mulinuu, the resting place of the highest chiefs of Samoa.
