RUGBY FOOTBALL

THE OTAGO UNION MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE The weekly meeting of the Committee of Management of the Otago Rugby Union was held last night. The nresident (Mr D. C. Jolly) occupied the chair. Death of Player The chairman said that it was with great regret that he had to refer to the death of Mr L. D. Aitken. Mr Aitken had first played with the Southern Club and then with the Dunedin Club, of which he was a good player and a good committeeman. He had played for Otago with a B team which had toured the goldfleids. Mr Jolly said that the secretary had sent a wreath. On his motion, it was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mrs Aitken. Managers Appointed ■ Mr V. G. was appointed manager of the Otago team to play at Invercargill for the Ranfurly Shield. Mr A. Grant was appointed manager of the Otago junior team which is to play at Invercargill on the same day as the Ranfurly Shield game Messrs A. Marslin, F. Rouxelle S. Jenkins, and J. P. Lyall were nominated for the position of manager of the sub-unions' team which is to play the Southland Sub-unions' team at Invercargill on July 22 Mr C. G. Gibbons was appointed manager of the team while it is in Dunedin Otago Representative Team The 34 players from which the Otago team is to be selected to play at Invercargill for the Ranfurly Shield will meet for practice at Carisbrook tomorrow night at 7.30. SOUTHERN TO MEET KAIKORAI NEW DRAW FOR SATURDAY COMMITTEEMAN'S EXPLANATION

A new senior draw, to replace that for last Saturday's matches, which could not be played because of the wet weather, has been issued for next Saturday. When Mr J. B. Wootton, a member of the Flag Committee of the Otago Rugby Union, was asked last night if it were correct that it had been stated that the four leading teams in the senior competition were to meet he replied in the affirmative. He was asked further why, if that were the case, a change in the fixtures from last Saturday—when Union was set down to meet Southern—had been decided on. Union is now to play University A on Saturday next, and the two leading teams—Kaikorai and Southernare to meet. It was pointed out to Mr Wootton that Union had beaten Pirates and Kaikorai in the second round but that it had not met the other leading team, Southern. Mr Wootton said that the Flag Committee had gone thoroughly into the matter and it considered that as there were only two more playing Saturdays it was only right that the two leading teams—that is Kaikorai and Southern—should meet, so that if play could not, through bad weather, take place on the remaining Saturday, finality in the competition would be reached. If the weather was suitable for the final Saturday the draw would still enable the four leading teams to meet. The position, however, will still be that, as Pirates have also not met Southern, the four leading teams may. in the final issue, not njeet in the<second round. ~ , , ~ The following j* the draw (all matches will' be commenced at, 2.30 p.m., unless otherwise stated):— Senior Grade.—Kaikorai v. SUB-UNIONS' MATCH WEST OTAGO DEFEATS SOUTH OTAGO A FORWARD STRUGGLE Conditions could hardly have been worse on Saturday for the sub-unions match between West and South Otago. which was played at Tapanui. Rain fell almost continuously throughout the Same, and due to the wet weather experienced this week the ground was in poor condition. The game was almost entirely confined to the forwards, in which the local side predominated. West Otago won by 22 points to 3 The teams were as follows: South Otago.—Forrester. Shand, Whittaker, McPherson. Nicol. Stanaway Gadsby. Brown, Burns. Moffat, Mayor Orr Barett Willocks McKen7ie,

West Otago.—McFadzien, Dempsey, Lischner, W. Reid, Revie, J. Reid. Donald. Aitcheson, Spittle. Cushnie, Paul. Donald McCann. Amas. Campbell From the start of play South Otago attacked, their line kicking being effective' From a loose scrum the ball was heeled by the South forwards, Gadsby securing and sending his backs awav in a nice rush which ended in Shand going over to score. Forrester s kick failed. From the kick-off McKenzie made a break dor West Otago, but Forrester sent the ball back with a good line kick. The West forwards were securing the ball from the scrums, but faulty handling by the backs saw the advantage lost on many occasions Paul secured and found touch in South territory From the throw-in South secured and swept play to the other end of the ground, but McFadzien saved From a scrum South secured, but Lischner intercepted and broke clear away He was unsupported, however, and was forced to kick but. South forwards now took a hand on attack and Forrester had an unsuccessful shot at goal. Half time was called.a little later with the scores South Otago 3, West Otagp nil. On resuming West Otago Dlayed more like a team, both backs and forwards combining better. From a scrum at half way Lischner secured and carried play deep into South territory before being brought down. From some loose play W. Reid secured and battled across the line to score. His kick was unsuccessful, making the scores 3—all Both sides took a turn at attacking. Paul, who was playing a fine game for West, repeatedly broke away in dribbling rushes. From some 30 yards out Lischner secured and after steadying himself kicked a nice field goal, making the score West 7, South 3. The local forwards kept up the pressure Paul securing and scored near the posts. McFadzien kicked a goal. West Otago 12. South 3. West returned to the attack, but were held up close to the line. Gadsby relieving. The local forwards, led by Paul and Amas. again swept all before them, the latter eventually going over to score a welldeserved try. West Otago 15 South 3. From the restart of play Whittaker ran his backs into position and a nice run by them looked dangerous, a knockon spoiling the movement From the succeeding scrum the West forwards broke away and South was penalised. McFadzien kicking a good goal. West \8 South 3. At this stage the West forwards were well on top of then opponents and rushed plav to the twenty-five, where McFadzien secured and kicked the second field goalof the game. Play settled at midfield for the next few minutes and the whistle sounded for time with the scores: West Otago .. ■ • 22 points. South Otago .... 3 points. Mr K. Kidd was referee. WAKATIPU SUB-UNION QUEENSTOWN DEFEATS ARROW In somewhat bleak conditions Queenstown defeated Arrowtown on the Queenstown ground on Saturday. The score was 12 points (four tries) to nil in favour of Queenstown. ,The cup points to date are:—Queenstown 7. Country 5. Arrow 2

SOUTH TUAPEKA SUB-UNION BEAUMONT DEFEATS LAWRENCE In the first round of the Dewar knockout competition. Lawrence was defeated by Beaumont by 3 points to nil. The match was played under atrocious weather conditions at the Beaumont racecourse on Saturday. Play was very even for some time in the first half. Morrison headed a Green dribbling rush, and Bayne put in a r.Deedy run to notch a try. Beaumont 3, Lawrence nil. Guffie and Pearson broke away for Beaumont, but Cavanagh picked up smartly and. with a lons kick, found touch 40 yards upfield. From a line ou 4 Stuart secured and passed to Percy, who set the Lawrence backs in motion. Mishandling, however, spoilt the movement. Then Hogg made a great effort to force his way over, but he was unsupported, and R. Jones relieved. Halftime was called with no alteration to the score In the second spell play was confined to the forwards, and the two packs had a hectic struggle in which neither could claim any advantage. The game was very willing, and the referee had to warn a prominent Beaumont forward. For Beaumont Hand. Guffle, and G. Jones were preat toilers, while for Lawrence. Stuart Percy, and Cavanagh played good games. There was no score in the second spell, and the match ended:— Beaumont 3. Lawrence nil.

BERGHAN AND GILLIES QUESTION OF AVAILABILITY T. Berghan, who is a dental student at Otago University, lost time from his studies last year when he went t.o Australia with the New Zealand team, and he is therefore not anxious to take any more time from his University studies. He has informed the Otago selectors that he will not be able to attend training, but that he would be prepared, if required, to play against Southland for the Ranfurly Shield. It will be noticed that C. C. Gillie* has not been selected to play for the Northern Sub-unions' team in the trial game against the Southern Sub-unions team at Palmerston on Saturday Gillies is spending his term holidays in the North Island, and it appears doubtful whether he will be available for the Ranfurly Shield game at Invercargill.
