The monthly meeting of the Middlemarch Institute was held on Thursdaylast, Mrs C. Polaschik (vice-president) presiding. Mrs L. Mitchell spoke on the motto, which was " Diet cures more than lances." The roll call was, "How to make winter more cheerful." Miss R Harris spoke on the third line of the institute creed, and Mrs J. White gave a demonstration on shadow work. An address was given by Dr Ldgan on " Diet." The competitions resulted:—Richelieu or cut work—Mrs G. Robertson 1, Miss R. Harris 2; school lunch—Mrs G. Robertson 1, Mrs F Beattie 2, Miss B Munro ,3. Hostesses were Mesdames J. Slater, F. Stevenson, T. Stevens, B. Watson, and Miss E. Valentine. * * * The Macandrew Bay Institute held its monthly meeting on Thursday last. The motto was, "Who helps to bear
another's load, brings joy into her own abode," and the roll call, "Sick room hint." A talk on "Home Nursing" was given by Mesdames McDonald and Brookman. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect when reference was made to the death of Mrs MacDougal's mother, Mrs Kroon. An interesting letter was received from Motcome Institute (Dorset) by the youngest member, Mrs Tyrie. The competitions resulted:—Wood pulp flowers—Mrs Quartermain 1, Mrs Butler, sen., 2; best bloom—Mrs Lang and Mrs Stapleton (equal) 1, Mrs Hartley 3; felt or leather article—Mrs Stapleton 1, Mrs Butler, sen., 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Pocklington, Wilson, Budd, Hartley, Riddell, Habershon, and Dickinson.
The monthly meeting of the Papakaio Institute was held at-Mrs Hurst's residence, Mrs Odell presiding. The roll call was "Hints on cooking vegetables." Mrs Borrie gave a reading of a "Maori Romeo and Juliet," and Mrs Webster (Windsor Park) gave three interesting demonstrations —on stucco work, patchwork and a knitted, beaded evening bag. The competitions resulted.—Quilted article—Mrs Odell 1, Mrs M- Ludemann 2; shortbread—Mrs Milson 1. Miss M. Ludemann 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Neil and Beardsmore.
The June meeting of the Kakanui Institute was held recently, Mrs Rusbatch presiding. The roll call was "Ideas for the birthday party." the most popular idea proving to be a fancy dress party, and it was unanimously decided to hold such a function in September. An interesting and instructive address was-given by Mrs W. G. Wilson on photograph colouring. The competitions resulted:—Bed socks —Mrs Rusbatch 1. Mrs W. G. Wilson 2; gingerbread cake—Mrs Carleton 1. Mrs W. G. Wilson and Miss J. Wilson (equal) 2; bloom—Mrs W. G. Wilson 1. Mrs Carleton 2. The hostesses were Mrs E. M. McGregor and Miss R. McGregor. * * *
Mrs A. McTaggart presided at the monthly meeting of the Broad Bay Institute held on Tuesday last. "A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men," was the motto, and the roll call was " Our oldest hat" and "Do you know." A bring-and-buy sale
for the Otago Pioneer Women's Memorial Association fund was held and a satisfactory sum was realised. The competition—nut loaf—resulted: Mrs Hairley 1, Mrs A. McTaggart and Miss Clearwater (equal) 2. A pleasant social half hour was spent in a local name competition and singing, the hostesses were Mrs H. McTaggart and Mrs H. King.
Mrs J. Logie presided over a splendid attendance of members and friends at the meeting of the Stirling Institute. The Golden Thread funds was constituted by Mrs Coatsworth. who read some of Fay Inchfawn's poems. The roll call was "Kitchen accidents I have experienced." A competition—three pieces of shortbread—resulted: Mrs J. B. McKinlay 1, Mrs J. Mosley 2. Mrs C. Anderson and several members of the Junior Homemakers' Club were present. A bring and buy sale was held, and a demonstration on table service given. Good wishes with musical honours were accorded Miss Cuthbertson. a bride-elect. The motto was " One never regrets what one did
The Glenavy Institute's monthly meeting was presided over by Miss Smart. A progressive euchre party was held, the winners being Miss Carroll and Mrs Solomon. During the meeting Miss Smart presented the prizes to the winners of the various competitions during the year—Mrs Cuthbertson. sen., and Miss J. McLean.
