Miss Cox, of Christchurch, is the guest of Mrs Sandford Cox.
# * HMrs Eustace Macassey left yesterday on a visit to Mrs A. D. Bell, of Shag Valley.
Mrs Guy Sinclair will leave to-day to spend a holiday at Shag Valley as the guest of Mrs Frank Bell.
Dr and Mrs Gillie, of London, will arrive from the north to-morrow, and will be the guests of Miss Downie Stewart, of Heriot row.
Mr and Mrs F. Avent, and Mr and Mrs H. H. Dobie, who have been on a three weeks'.tour to North Auckland by car. returned home on Saturday.
The next meeting of the Dunedm Travel Club will be held at the Vedic Cafe to-morrow morning. The hostesses will be Mesdames Norman Speight and C. G. May, and the speaker, Mr H. Bond, of Sydney.
After spending a few days with her sister in Dunedin, Miss Joyce Black, of Groper's Bush, Riverton, left by the north express on Saturday morning to spend a few weeks as the guest of her mother in Wellington.
A pleasant afternoon was spent at the residence of Mrs B. B. Aldndge, of Oturehua, on Tuesday afternoon, when the ladies of the Ida Valley Presbyterian Church met to welcome their new minister's wife, Mrs Smail. Visitors were present from Poolburn, Ida Valley, and Wedderburn. An enjoyable afternoon was spent with competitions and community singing.
Miss Joan Harrison was hostess at a five o'clock party on Saturday afternoon at her home in Queen street. Her guests included Mr and Mrs H. J. Dodgshun. Mr and Mrs A. T. Waugh, Mr and Mrs J. Fitzgerald, Mr and Mrs R. O'Connell Shiel, Misses Molly Scott, Pat Hanlon, Molly Runnerstrum. Valerie Balentine, Elsie and Joan Bremner, and Phyllis Harrison, and Messrs Maurice Chrystall, Michael Andrew, Norman Bathgate, Darwent Dodgshun, A. Riley, Dr A. Rutherford and Dr T. W. Harrison.
A happy evening was spent by .a large gathering of members and friends of the Every Girls' Club recently, when Miss Reid read a number of greetings from absent friends, conveying best wishes for the success of the club, which is entering its twenty-sixth year. Any girl who cares to, can attend these gatherings, which are held on the first Monday of every month. She need not necessarily be a member of the Y W C.A. As usual, the committee had arranged the hall most attractively, bowls of autumn berries and huge fires making a cosy setting for the presentation of the programme, which was an impromptu one. interspersed with dancing, games, and competitions. Those who contributed items were:— Mrs McMillen (recitations), Miss Mercer (songs), and ft iss Holland (character sketches). A choir competition was held under the leadership of Miss Crawley. Misses Renwick and Crawley acted as accompanists for the evening - * *: *
A " hard up " party and dance given for officers and ratings of the Otago Division R.N.V.R. and their friends by the commanding officer, Commander F. Fraser, RiN.V.R., and Mrs Fraser, was held at the divisional headquarters on Thursday last/ The costumes were many and varied, - and the party went with a swing from the commencement and continued with increasing. .enjoyment until midnight. A dialect recitation by Miss Norma Brown was enthusiastically applauded, as was fa humorous encore item and a cleverjy worded" mock radio broadcasting station skit on the speeches of several leading political personalities presented by Lieutenant Bell and Allan, assisted by Leading-seaman Kerr. A delicious supper served in true hard up" style was partaken of, and towards the end of the evening Lieutenant J. N. Allan proposed a vote of appreciation and thanks to Commander and Mrs Fraser for their hospitality.
