SOUTH OTAGO

BALCLUTHA Clutha River Trust The adjourned monthly meeting of the Lower Clutha River Trust was held yesterday, Mr P. Keller (chairman) presiding over a full attendance of members. The chairman formally welcomed the newly appointed engineer (Mr A. J. McD. Miller, of Wellington), who suitably responded. The clerk of the Clutha County Council wrote stating that his council was gratified with the trust's response to the request for co-opera-tion in the matter of a bridge over the Molyneux at Paretai. His council trusted that the approval of the Minister of Public Works would be forthcoming, and that Paretai and Inch Clutha residents would shortly be served with a modern bridge.—lt was decided that the engineer should inspect the proposed site before further steps were taken. Mr P. Souness, Kaitangata, wrote stating that the lock on the outlet of the Matau drain running into the Kaitangata canal required some attention. It was decided that the new engineer should investigate and report. James Milne, Inch Clutha. wrote regarding the river bank near the Paretai punt. It was some time since Mr Bell had inspected it, he said, and nothing had been done. Mr Bell said he had inspected the bank, and it certainly was in a bad state, but Mr Milne had himself/to blame, as his cattle had knocked it about.—lt was decided that Mr Bell take the engineer to inspect. Archie Anderson, Stirling, write asking if the trust would help in raising the protective bank on his property at Stirling. Other settlers were affected, and it was imperative that the work should be done as soon as possible. He was willing to assist with a man and team if required.—lt was decided that the engineer should inspect the banks. The town clerk, Balclutha, wrote stating that his council had been advised by the commissioner of Crown lands that the matter of willows and noxious weeks on the Barnego River bank came within the jurisdiction of the Clutha River Board (now the Lower Clutha River Trust). His council was concerned at the unchecked growth of the willows, which constituted a serious menace to the safety of the town of Balclutha in flood time. He was therefore directed to ask the trust to take early steps tg have the willows removed.—Mr Copland explained that the work was to cost £SOO, and the borough was contributing £SO of this,> but the. offer was withdrawn by the, Public Works Department at the request of the council because at that time the new River Trust was being orme.d.—lt was decided that the engineer report on the whole matter at next meeting.—lt was decided that legal action should be taken to recover all outstanding rates. The financial statement presented by the secretary was adopted and accounts passed for payment. It was decided to proceed with the classification of lands within the area, and Messrs Copland and Alexßenton were appointed to do the work. Obituary

MILTON Ploughing Club There was a large attendance of those interested in holding a ploughing match in the Tokomairiro district at a meeting held on Friday evening. Owing to the difficulty of securing a suitable paddock and also the lateness of the season, it was decided not to hold a match this year, but a strong committee of 12, with Mr James McGuigan as president, and Mr W. Lockhart as secretary, was elected to make arrangements to ensure that a match would be held next year. These matches were a feature of farmers' activities several years ago.
